trendy, vegan-friendly Mexican restaurant and bar

Restaurant, Bar

Riviera Maya is a trendy Mexican restaurant and bar with a large dining room decorated with large photographs, original artwork, and painted murals. The restaurant is dimly lit and romantic, with the latest salsa and bachata music playing in the background.

Riviera Maya goes out of their way to offer vegetarian options not usually found in traditional Mexican restaurants, and most of these options can be made vegan by ommitting the cheese. Some vegan options include the calabazitas (zucchini, corn, carrots and red peppers) or papitas (potatoes, corn, & poblano pepper) mole with chili verde, the pastel de Berenjena (layered eggplant, zucchini, and carrots, sourrounded by red sauce and rice); or the rollitos de col (cabbage rolls stuffed with zucchini, corn, and potatoes, served over rice with red sauce).

There is a vegetarian section of the menu, and a few of these options appear to be vegan, but actually come with cheese sprinkled on top, so be sure to ask your server to omit the cheese. Riviera Maya also offers a vegetarian version of their tortilla soup (which is also vegan), with any veg meal, you just have to ask for it.

A few of the appetizers are vegan (be sure to omit cheese and/or sour cream), including the chips and salsa, the guacamole, tortilla soup (specify the vegetarian version), and the taquitos de papa (fried potato tacos). Note that of the 6 mole options, only one is vegetarian, and the menu clearly indicates this.

Their vegan options are pretty great! The drinks are superb. The prices are totally reasonable and ever time I've eaten there, I left full and very satisfied.

I was SOOOO impressed with this place. Milwaukee has tons of Mexican restaurants where you can get vegan rice and beans, but this place has the most varied and interesting vegan/vegetarian menu.

We started with the taquitos de papa appetizer, which was pretty good, but I felt the actual potato taquitos were really small, compared to the huge mound of lettuce and salsa that accomponied it. I had the calebazitas mole with chili verde, which was good, but could have used more spice. I added some of the spicy salsa that came with my taquitos de papa to it and it was much better. My mom had the pastel de Berenjena (sort of veg lasagna w/ no noodles), without the cheese, and that was also pretty good, but I like my food spicy, so I added salsa to it. We both had the vegetarian tortilla soup, which was really good and really flavorful, but was a bit too spicy for my mom.

I loved the artwork in the restaurant and loved the music that was playing, which was nice in the background and not too loud. While the service was really friendly and very willing to accomodate vegan requests, I think it took WAY too long for our server to initially come, and then too long to bring and pick up the check.
