vegan-friendly Egyptian-Middle Eastern restaurant

Cafe Rakka is a small cafe in the East Village offering a substantial amount of vegan items. The cafe is very small, with only 2 or 3 tables inside (more outside when the weather permits), so they do a lot of take out.

Vegan menu items include falafel, hummus, babaganush, stuffed grape leaves, tabouli, fava bean salad, cous cous, mujadarra (fluffy cracked wheat and lentils), and rice w/ vermicelli. Most of these items are around $3.50 and they have combos for $4.50 (falafel and tabuli, falafel and hummus, etc).

Vegetarian combo platters are $7-10 and include different combinations of the above items.

Note that there is a $10 minimum for credit cards.

I really like this place because it's cheap, good, and says "vegetarian food" on the awning, which is always a plus for me. I usually just get the falafel with hummus, which is $4.50. The flavor is really good (not spectacular, but good), and I like that the tahini sauce is nice and garlicky.

When the weather is nice, I like to sit at the outdoor tables and watch people, as it's right near 1st Ave, which is a good people-watching area. :)
