Mother's Cafe and Garden

Based upon the food that my Wife and I enjoyed, the food here is Spot On!

I had the Szechuan Stir Fry with Linguine and Black Beans with Bavarian Chocolate Cake for dessert. Amazing! The veggies were crisp and not wilted. The sauce was not overly spicy and the linguine was perfectly cooked. The cake was simply delicious.

My Wife had a Tomato Bisque followed by a Quesadilla with Guacamole. Regarding the soup, I am now tasked with copying the soup so I can make it at home. The Quesadilla was pretty good. Luckily they have switched to Daiya Vegan Cheese, but she did feel that they may have put a bit too much on.

Overall, my Wife and I feel quite firmly that Mother's is our favorite Vegan Restaurant in Austin, TX. The feeling must be unanimous, as they were fully packed at 8PM on a Thursday.

I wasn't super impressed with my food but I think I was a bit unlucky with my selections. I went with the vegan enchiladas mole, which come with either vegan cheese or seasoned tofu. As Mother's uses Vegan Rella (which I consider to be the WORST vegan cheese on the planet), I went with the tofu. The enchiladas were fine, but the entire dish was very starch and would have benefitted greatly from some fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion garnish or from an option to have the enchiladas stuffed with vegetables. Instead, the corn tortillas were stuffed with tofu, topped with tofu, and served with beans and rice so the entire plate was varying shades of brown and grey.

I was on a mission to try as much BBQ as possible while in Texas so I got a BBQ tofu sandwich to go. I sampled it fresh just in case it would get all soggy later. It was good fresh, but nothing to brag about. I will say, however, that it was only $7 and was HUGE so it made a great meal on the road for the drive back down to Houston.

I was unsuccessful convincing my dining companions to try vegan options (boo for scrambled eggs!) but one got the pancakes on the side, which were vegan by default. The pancakes were fantastic! Large, fluffy, and delicious! And only $2.99 to add one to a meal. The server said they come with free strawberries and whip cream (not vegan!), but then actually charged my friend 95 cents. Not a big deal, but the server confirmed it would be free.

I finished the meal with some vegan chocolate cake which was fantastic. It was very moist and rich and came with sliced strawberries, which was a real treat.

All in all, I'd definitely go back to this place, as there's about 43 other items on the menu I'd like to try!

Mother's is great. It is completely vegetarian, so you don't have to worry about smelling/seeing meat. There are tons of vegan (and vegetarian) options. Some of their food can be bland, but their menu is very straightforward and honest so you know what you are getting into. Parking can be a problem, even when it isn't peak times, and they get really busy.

hmmm, maybe I had a bad visit, I tried the "famous" bbq tofu sandwich and was not impressed, honestly it tasted like plain baked tofu pieces with tomato sauce dumped all over it on a bun, I don't know if this is what you call BBQ sauce or if someone goofed in the kitchen this night, but seriously it was just tomatoe sauce, I prefer more flavor in my food, my friend had the stuffed relleno, it was just a pepper loaded with melted cheese, not very creative to me, but I'll try to give Mother's another chance..another day

All of the food here is vegetarian, about half being vegan. The veggie burgers have won numerous awards and the vegan sloppy joes taste delicious and are just sloppy enough. I didn't try any of the desserts but there seemed to be about 12, with 5 or so being vegan. I came here with several non-vegetarian friends, and all were impressed by the food (especially the vegetable lasagna).

A nice casual dining experience. The restaurant is separated into an "inside" eating area and the "garden" (an enclosed area with many plants and plenty of heating and air conditioning). The garden offers a relaxing atmosphere, though the brick floor is a bit uneven, so the tables and chairs are usually a bit wobbly. One of their most popular items is the "bueno burger" (vegan) -- even staunch meat eaters love this one. Other great items are the "tofu lasagna," "BBQ tofu," and their "garden stir fry" (all vegan). You get free chips and salsa before your meal, but sometimes there's a bit too much cilantro in the salsa, and it stays with you for the rest of the day and night. Items on the menu are clearly marked with a "v" for vegan or a "*" which means an item can be made vegan upon request (and most items can be made vegan). They serve Saturday and Sunday brunch with great vegan pancakes. They have a few good vegan items for dessert, too. All their food is reasonably priced.

Just about everything on the menu is delicious! They also have great smoothies -- you can actually taste the fruit, unlike the smoothies from those big smoothie chains. And you must save room for dessert. They have the best vegan cake I've ever tasted!
