I only tried the cans, but they were a hit! My cats eat Benevo dry as their main food, with Ami dry as a snack twice per day. I really wanted to get a wet food they liked as none of the 8 would touch the Benevo Duo (my sister's dog enjoyed the other 23 cans!) and only one likes the VegePet mix. I'd rather it didn't have avocado in it, but since I only give it as a treat, I can live with it.

Not sure how many of the positive reviews are from real people, wording and tone seem pretty similar to Evolution's website. My two cats were feral when my spouse and I rescued them as kittens 5 years ago. They ate meat-based cat food and then we had them on a nutritionally complete raw meat diet (specifically designed for cats) for about 6 months. To my dismay, they got pretty fat and lazy as they grew into adults. I didn't think a vegan diet was possible for cats until I spoke with Dr. Andrew Knight, a vegan vet originally from Australia. He is one of the few vets who has done research into and promotes vegan diets for both dogs and cats. After some guidance from the vet and my own research, I decided to try vegan food for the kitties using the Vegecat Phi supplement - which includes essential nutrients for cats (taurine, Vitamin A, of course, amongst others) and is designed to prevent urinary tract issues. Neither of our cats had shown any signs of medical problems but from what I read that was a big concern when feeding a diet high in plant-based proteins and carbs. As long as the diet is properly supplemented, it doesn't really matter where the cat gets the nutrients from - animals or plants (this piece of advice came from the mouth of a vegan vet out of the UK who feeds his own cats vegan food). That being said, we add an enzyme (Prozyme) to the food that makes it easier for the cats' bodies to absorb the food's nutrients. We made kibble and wet food using both of these supplements, following the manufacturer directions and our cats did fine on that for about 2.5 years. It was a lot of work, and while we continued to use the supplement for making wet food we decided to buy a vegan kibble to ease the workload - Ami, shipped from Italy. Both cats like eating this kibble and it is nutritionally complete. Worth mentioning that our male cat also eats canned pumpkin with his meals to increase fiber and prevent diarrhea, added based on the advice of our vet because he was digesting his food too quickly and experiencing soft stool. Added pumpkin aided his digestion a lot and he has perfect poop.

Only within the past month have we switched from homemade wet food to Evolution brand canned wet food. It smells pretty good, and our cats seem to like it. They have bigger (but normal) poop but otherwise we haven't noticed any negative effects. We will continue to mix in the Vegecat Phi supplement and the enzyme because these have worked wonderfully for the past 4 years. Our indoor, 5-yr old vegan cats are fit, have tons of energy, eat well and eliminate normally. They've been eating vegan food for about 4 years. Points to consider:

-Commercial cat food is also supplemented with added nutrients after it is processed, because the heat from processing breaks down naturally-derived nutrients like taurine in meat.
-I agree that it's not natural for cats to eat a vegan diet, but they can certainly live and thrive on one if they like the food and it is properly supplemented. It's also not natural to feed cats tuna, milk, beef, pork, most seafood, etc., because they couldn't hunt these animals in the wild in their current evolutionary state. It's not natural to keep them indoors, but a choice made by their guardians for lots of reasons. It's not natural to spay or neuter, not natural to pet them and shoot them with vaccines, etc. These are decisions we have to make for them, regardless of our reasons - so is the decision what to feed them.
-Every cat is an individual and may not do well on a vegan diet. Take your cat to the vet regularly to ensure you are on top of any health issues that may arise, regardless of the diet you choose to feed them.
-Carnivore is a word whose Latin origins lie in the 16th century. We've learned a lot since the 16th century, and continue to learn a lot today, about the world around us, other species, and ourselves. I would guess that we will continue to discover more about the hardiness of other species and their abilities to adapt and evolve, regardless of the restraints we currently believe they operate under.
-Vegan dog and cat food is still a tiny, niche market. Evolution does not have the best reputation because of the founder's behavior. I would recommend using a supplement like Vegecat and a digestive enzyme, or feeding multiple brands of vegan food to ensure your cat has an opportunity to absorb all the correct nutrients they need to survive. Ami, Benovo, VeGourmet are all brands worth checking out. Do your research!

Evolution seems like a good product, but really needs more of a long-term market base to prove its quality. Because my cats are healthy I am willing to try the food and see how they do. My cats are young and all signs - from their eye and teeth health, to the quality of their coats, to the quality of their elimination, to their behavior and activity levels, point to their overall well-being but as with any diet, close monitoring and common sense is key.

Vegan food should NOT be fed to pets that are obligate carnivores, cats and ferrets especially! It will shorten their lifespans significantly. The ingredients are mainly grains, corn and soy. DO NOT BUY if you love your pets! Get a hamster or a rabbit if you want a real "vegan" pet.

My kitten was a rescue and very small. He was burdened with many health issues along with being the runt of his litter. He had leaky eyes, weak immune system, and bleeding bowel. He was anemic and had diarrhea that came out bleeding.

I had ordered another vegan cat food being very cautious to make sure that my kitten was going to get all the nutrients he would need. Already having been so careful in my own food program I was extremely cautious in putting him on a vegan diet making SURE to do all my homework and ensure his nutritional needs would be met. This food failed in proving to do just this.

I found and ordered Evolutions Cat Dry Food. Reconstituting it and giving it to him was the best thing I have ever done! His coat has come in shiny, he has rocket fuel for energy, and sleeps very well.

As far as the health issues go the Founder of Evolution Pet Food Eric taught me what was needed for the nutritional healing benefits for my kitten; upon research had I taken my kitten to a vet for his problem he most likely wouldn't have survived. Eric saved my kittens life!

I know a lot of natural healers and those who teach alternative healing tend to get bad reps and a lot of criticism. Some of which earn their bad rep; in this case however Eric earned his gold stars! I made a donation to thank him and will do another at Christmas as he never charged me for the time he talked to me on the phone! Thank you again Eric!

Evolution Cat Food is amazing. Although vegan cats tend to be slender than the average overweight cat, so can be said for most people who eat a plant based food program. My kitten is not bleeding, not anemic, tons of energy still, beautiful pink ears and gums, shiny coat and living the life! Thank you Evolution!

I am a scientist and have done extensive research on Evolution Diet. It has not only all the vitamins and minerals necessary for your dog or cat's proper nutrition but it also has THE HIGHEST QUALITY INGREDIENTS. I have also been unsing the product for 22 years! I rescue FIV cats and evolution diet not only supports felines and canines inmune systems but also maintains excellent health as the food has no toxins like in vertually all commercial pet foods. I am talking from experience here. Evolution Diet is the best pet food bar none! No other pet food come even close. It trully has quality ingredients and no toxics. When I first started using it I was also skeptical but it reversed diabetes in one of my first resqued kitties and that alone sold me. You'll be glad you got this product, it will save your dog or cat from diseases and it will also save you money when used according to the label. Ad water and moisten the kible 1-1 ratio and your dog and cat will stay hydrated and healthy! All my cats adapted to Evolution Diet and love the food. I WOULDN'T EVEN THINK OF FEEDING MY CATS ANYTHING ELSE!

If you are considering buying Evolution Diet products, you may find the interview with Eric Weisman I conducted for The Vegan Option of interest.

It covers the basis of his claims for Evolution, as well as the loss of his Chiropractic licence and criminal convictions for unsubstantiated claims.

This is is not a review, but as I hope it is genuinely useful to people seeking reviews, I hope you will let it stand. I have not rated the product, as I have no personal experience

Evolution Diet Pet Food is fabulous: my cat loves Evolution Diet Cat Kibble, and her perfect health explains why. She was raised on it as a rescue kitten and has grown to be a super-healthy adult cat. What distinguishes this gourmet cat food is that it has all of the essential nutrients and none of the harmful by-products found in mainstream cat food brands. Thanks to Eric Weisman – inventor, pioneer, truly humane individual – both I and my cat can live a life of health and peace.

Poor ingredient quality, too many fillers.

Petguard Organic Vegetarian (which has organic eggs, sadly) or Natural Balance vegetarian (vegan) are much better quality foods. If Evolution could get rid of all the fillers and make their food corn/soy/wheat free then I might give it a shot. As it stands, I wouldn't ever feed it.

My rats get the Petguard Organic Veg dog kibble (since rats are sensitive to GMOs) and my cat gets a grain-free food from Natural Balance suitable for obligate carnivores. She was adopted pre-veganism and will be my last carnivorous companion once she passes. I'm sticking with scrappy omnivores like rats who thrive on vegan/veg diets from now on.

I love the idea of Evolution and I would certainly feed it to a dog (if I had one) since dogs are omnivores. However, as my vet always says, cats are obligate carnivores. I decided to challenge this idea by raising my cat on Evolution vegan cat food. From the time that she was 8 weeks old until she was about 3 years old I fed her nothing but vegan food, but I ultimately decided that it would be best to start feeding her a meat-based diet. When my cat was eating Evolution, she really didn't seem to enjoy eating and would just barely eat enough to survive. She was only 5 lbs at the time that I started feeding her meat, which is very underweight for an adult-sized cat (she weighs a healthy 8.5 lbs now). In addition, she was developing all sorts of urinary tract problems, which apparently are common in female cats raised on a vegetarian diet.

I feel very guilty feeding my cat meat, since it does conflict with my personal ethics. However, I make an effort only to buy meat from animals that she could kill in nature (small fish) and I don't buy anything that contains animal byproducts or meat from factory-farmed animals. It's not an ideal situation, but the only alternatives would be to give away my cat (at which point someone else would probably start feeding her factory-farmed animal byproducts) or force her to suffer from unnecessary health problems.

My dogs prefer the Gourmet Pasta food over any other veg and non-veg dog food. If I get them anything else, they turn their noses up! Plus, it's great that they deliver to the metro area at no extra cost. I'm glad this company is around to make feeding my dogs a vegan diet quick and easy.

I have been feeding both my adopted greyhound (now 7 years old) and my cat (now 8 years old) Evolution kibble for the last 5 years. Their veterinarians are in full support of the dietary choice because they have observed them thriving throughout the course of their time using Evolution. They do not receive any supplements, just those present in the food, and they eat only vegan treats. Great stuff!!

My standard poodle has extremely bad allergies and can only eat vegetarian foods. I tried him on many different types of vegetarian dry dog foods and Evolution Diet is the only one he would eat. I still worry about him getting the proper nutrients so I supplement the food with some cheese and a little tuna with each feeding, plus a vitamin pill each morning, and at ten years old he seems to be doing extremely well.

I fed this stuff to my cat for a couple of years, she was probably 17 or 18 when I started, and she lived to be 22. I ended up switching her to a medicated food when she required it. Anyway, I would say that Evolution is a good option for people who are concerned about animal rights and ethics. If you're concerned about what's best for your pup pup or kitty's health, I would say that this certainly can't be any worse than feeding them nasty kibbles n' bits or meow mix. It is a bit difficult to come by. Apparently it was discontinued due to low sales at our co-op - but that isn't suprising, as it is a bit expensive in comparison to many other meat-based brands. I do encourage people with companion animals to explore the possibilities of a vegetarian diet for their critters. It's easier than it sounds.

I've been feeding my two cats Evolution Diet for over three months now, and they've done extremely well. One of my cats is a finicky eater, so he took a couple of days to warm up to it, but now he'll eat nothing else!

They don't like the food when moistened. I serve it dry and have had no problems whatsoever. They both drink plenty of water anyway, so the dry food should be better for their teeth.

My cats are only about a year and a half old and in great health, but after I switched them over to Evolution Diet I did notice improved levels of activity and hygeine.

I've never seen Evolution Diet in retail stores - I order directly from the Weismans at petfoodshop.com. At bulk prices, after shipping it's comparable to mass-market premium food; one fourty-pound bag for two cats seems to last about four months.

As a strict vegetarian, I think Evolution Diet is a fantastic product. It fills a need noone had attempted to address, and does a great job in the process. I wish more people knew about this wonderful pet food!

I've been feeding my two cats Evolution since 1999. They don't prefer it to meat-based catfoods (not surprising), but they eat it. As far as I'm concerned, Evolution is the only reason that I, as a vegan, can own cats.

How about reviewing in reviews? There's an idea.

I have used Evolution's kibble and canned food and I think it's of good quality and my cats ate it. You should not trust any company based only on their claims. Evolution, Purina, Walmart, etc. But Evolution Diet kibble is supplemented and uses higher quality ingredients than the meat-based foods I fed my cats before. I think the ethical argument for using Evolution is more strongly defined than their health claims.

The 30% increase in life expectancy and 30% decrease in feeding are references to a 15 year study by the National Institute of Health (2002). Animals in this study were fasted 2 non-consecutive days per week to reduce total caloric intake. Study animal life expectancy was incresed by following this protocol. While Evolution Diet was not used in this study, Evolution is the only company to advocate NIOH feeding guidelines. Evolution wants your pets to live the very longest and healthiest life, even if it means using less of our food. Other pet food companies just want to sell more food: The reason why they don't report the NIOH study. Consider the advantages of using a no animal meal, no animal by product, no saturated animal fat food while following the NIOH study protocol and the results would likely be superior. Tens of thousands of dogs and cats nationwide are living very long and healthy vegan lives on Evolution Diet. Even wolves at the NA Wolf Association are fed Evolution exclusively. Other major sanctuaries like Farm Sanctuary, Wilderness Ranch, Home at Last, Miracle Acres and many, many more use Evolution Diet For their dogs, cats and ferrets. These sancturaries use Evolution because it increases the health and logevity of their pets. Evolution is the only dry pet food manufacturer to advocate adding water to dry food along with fresh shredded raw fruit and vegetables to increase nutrition and hydration. Dogs, cats and ferrets eat moist food naturally. Feeding moist food reduces risk of blood thickening due to dehydration that may be caused by dry food. As blood thickens it has a tendency to coagulate and damage major organs like the heart, brain and kidneys. Moisturizing Evolution Gourmet Kibble may also help extend the life of dogs, cats and ferrets. Evolution is vegan, so there is never any concern of mad cow disease from the heads and spines being used in animal byproducts and animal meals or ecoli or botulism bacterial poisoning that can occur from animal tissue contamination. We have years of observations to substantiate the foregoing claims. Also, there is no need to worry about your dog, cat or ferret lacking essentials like taurine and all other proteins, vitamins and minerals. All Evolution products are 100% complete for all life stages according to the stringent AFFCO government requirements. Lynn Weisman, President, Evolution Diet

The rather over-the-top claims they make for this product cause me to be extremely skeptical of it. In particular, feeding cats a vegan diet is not known to be 100% safe, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
