Lake Street Cafe

Traverse City, Michigan

rating star

I ate here twice while I was visiting Traverse City and my conclusion is that the vegan sandwiches and paninis are really good and the drinks, smoothies and juices are very underwhelming.

The tempeh reuben is absolutely fantastic and it was the reason we returned and ate here twice in two days. I would return again simply for that sandwich (and the bulk vegan gummies that I found in the market.)

The agave lemonade was not very good and the ginger+cherry smoothie I tried was light on the cherry and extremely heavy on the ginger.

For years I saw the listing on VegGuide and Happycow for "Oryana Natural Food Market". Not wanting to go to a health food store, I ignored the listing thus never discovering the cafe inside. Also, it's in an out-of-the-way location - not on the main drag in dowtown TC - so it's not as though you'd discover this place from driving by. I gave it its own listing under Lake Steet Cafe so others do not pass it up.

Espresso drinks can be made with rice, almond or soy milk. Incredible selection of organic juices and smoothies.

Try the Grilled Veggie Panini with avocado, yams, red pepper, red onion, tomato and sundried tomato hummus on 7-grain bread. Also fabulous is the Tempeh Reuben and the "Hot to Trot Vegan" Sandwich with dill tofu salad, spicy pickled veggies, red onion, sprouts and tomato on North Country bread.

They also have a section with pre-made salads, sandwiches and other items so you can grab and go. There is some outdoor, shaded seating. Street parking is easy.

I don't find the staff here to be as friendly as The Dish cafe. And the food is slightly better at the Dish. But Lake Street Cafe has a better selection of vegan items and is great to go to when you need to mix it up.
