I've written a lot of reviews, and I don't hand out 10's willy nilly. My husband and I stayed at Thorwood this past weekend and were blown away by the service and overall quality of our stay. I highly reccomend checking out their website (see link on this page under their address) for details on the rooms and grounds. Pam and Dick (the Inn Keepers) were gracious in meeting our requests for vegan meals, and Pam even baked us a special batch of vegan cookies(!) because the ones they put out in a cookie jar for guests aren't vegan. They were easily among the best cookies I've ever had. They also provided fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and bottled water for the taking.
We opted to eat dinners at the Inn, and chose a fancy meal one night and a simple supper the next. The fancy dinner started with a field greens salad, topped with walnuts, soy cheese, strawberries, and a tangy fruity dressing (delicious). Next came our vegan pasta torte, with fresh tomatoes and basil layered in with pasta that had been tossed with soy cheese and tofu and baked. The presentation was amazing, and we were so impressed with how gorgeous everything looked and how great it tasted. The meal came with bread, and dessert was a banana cake with melted chocolate drizzled on top and toasted coconut flakes, with a chocolate-dipped strawberry on the side. We were in heaven.
Their vegetarian chili for the simple supper option was great, too, and is already vegan. They did provide us with vegan sour cream for a topping, as well as avacado salsa and lime wedges. It is served with corn chips. The salad preceding this meal was among the best I have ever had - spinach with walnuts, soy cheese, asian pears, and blueberries with a ginger sesame dressing.
Both breakfasts started with fresh fruit (melons, berries, mango, asian pear, pineapple) all perfectly ripe. The first day we had a breakfast burrito with potatos, bell peppers, and tomatoes served with fresh homemade salsa. The second day we had blueberry pancakes topped with vegan whipped cream and powdered sugar, with heated maple syrup and vegan margarine on the side. They were fluffy and light. We eat pancakes a few times a week at our house and haven't been able to achieve anything like this. The breakfast on the first day was followed by a mango blueberry cobbler for dessert, topped with vegan whipped cream. Very good.
We felt like were in the lap of luxury the entire time we were there. The mansion is beautiful, Dick and Pam's hospitality was unsurpassed, and we enjoyed our stay immensely. I highly recommend making a reseravtion, especially if you would like to have a romantic getaway with someone special, and be certain that your vegan needs will be met.
