Vegan wine bar and bistro

Brought to you by the owners of the Blossom chain, V-Note is a vegan wine bar and bistro located on the Upper East Side.

Appetizers run about $7-10 and include such items as curried potato crepes, ravioli, rosemary seitan, and crab cakes. Salads are about $10-14, depending on the size, and entrees (including seitan scallopini, mushroom risotto, smokey tempeh with chayote, and more) range from $17-22. Dessert starts at $7 (for a scoop of ice cream or sorbet) and extends to $14 (a chocolate fondue for two, including fresh fruit and homemade cookies).

V-Note also serves brunch and features savory items such as homemade veggie burgers, burritos, sandwiches, and salads, but also traditional breakfast items such as french toast , pancakes, and tofu scramble ($11-14).

Of course, as a wine bar, V-Note also features an extensive wine menu

V-Note is from the creator of Blossom and Café Blossom and is within walking distance of Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When you enter the restaurant, there is seating for couples against the front windows and two large booths for larger parties. On the right hand side is a large bench that runs the length of the restaurant, with several tables for seating for two and four people. On the left side is more seating and a large bar with seating. All of the seating in the restaurant is upholstered in white vinyl. The staff is very courteous and knowledgeable about the food and drinks.

We started off with the seitan Schnitzel, breaded seitan medallions that were hot, crunchy and delicious, especially when dipped in the blueberry reduction. The potato salad was good even though it had a very strong herb taste to it. The extra flavor took away instead of adding to the flavor.

My wife, had the Country Breakfast with tofu scramble, French toast, and soy sausage. This was the best tofu scramble I have had. It had lots of flavor and I wanted to trade plates with her. As a vegan it is hard to find good French toast and sausage and the V-Note cooked them both exceptionally well. If you are looking for a great brunch item, this is it.

I had the Soy Bacon Cheeseburger with caramelized onions, vegan cheese, soy bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle aioli on a sesame roll with French fries. If you are going to bring a carnivore to V-Note just order this for them and it will satisfy their taste buds. The rich, fatty, smoky flavors brought back memories of barbecuing in the backyard or eating at a fast food restaurant with friends and family. On the other hand, I had to keep telling myself it wasn’t meat and it was a delicious vegan burger. The downside of this burger is the vegan cheese, which had a sour taste when eaten by itself. Once I got bites of all of the flavors together, the sour taste disappeared.

My daughter, had the BLT with crispy southern fried tofu, tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, and field greens, and she said it was the best BLT she has ever had, which is high praise from a picky twelve-year-old.

The V-Note has choices of smoothies or shakes and I had the Banana Berry with soy milk, banana, blueberry, strawberry, and orange juice, which are some of my favorite flavors together and this didn’t disappoint me. The banana and berry were right and center in this thick concoction of smoothie goodness. My daughter ordered the Frappe with soy milk espresso, chocolate and vanilla ice cream, which was also delicious with a good caffeine kick.

We didn’t try the desserts since we were so full even though they looked delicious and we will make sure to save room for our next trek out to V-Note.

I have to admit that I had higher hopes for V-Note. I've been waiting for a restaurant like Millennium or Horizons to open in New York, but unfortunately V-Note isn't it. My main criticism is that the menu is very similar to the menu at Blossom. There needs to be more to distinguish the two restaurants.

I was also disappointed that, like Blossom, the desserts at V-Note were mediocre at best. The Peanut Butter Ganache had a terrible soy aftertaste. I quit eating it after the first bite and didn't even try to feign enthusiasm when the waiter asked me how it was. I wanted the dinner to end on a high note, so I ordered the Butterfinger Shake. The Butterfinger Shake is one of my favorite desserts at Cafe Blossom, but it felt out-of-place at a "high-end" restaurant.

The appetizers weren't as bad as the ganache, but they were somewhat uneven. The Seitan Schnitzel sounded delicious on paper, but in reality the blueberry reduction was just a simple blueberry sauce and there wasn't enough of it to moisten the large chunks of fried seitan that arrived on the same plate. The Black-Eyed Pea Cake was surprisingly good, but the portion was fairly large and there wasn't anything else on the plate, so I got bored with eating it by the end.

The best part of the meal, by far, was the entree. I ordered the Pistachio & Pepper Dusted Tofu, which came stacked on top of a root vegetable crepe. The crepe was surrounded by a moat of white truffle sauce, and it was the white truffle sauce that really made the dish. That said, it wasn't so spectacular that I would go out of my way to eat at V-Note again.

Overall, I think that V-Note will need to overhaul its current menu if it wants to compete with the other vegan establishments in New York. Until that happens, I can't see myself eating there again.
