vegan-friendly Caribbean/Jamaican restaurant

Healthy Choice is a Caribbean/Jamaican restaurant that offers numerous vegan options, including callalloo (vegetable similar to collards), rice and peas, fried plantains, veggie stew, and soy meat stew. They also offer vegan Caribbean breads, which are much more dense than traditional American varieties.

The restaurant is small but there is counter seating for about 4 people.

Note that while they do have a substantial vegan menu, their lunch special only applies to chicken.

After seeing their huge neon sign that says "vegetarian food", I stopped in here on my way to the Vegan's Delight restaurant/grocery, immediately next door. I can't say that I was impressed with the service, as the lady helping us seemed distracted, unhelpful, and unaware of what food was in the hot bar right in front of her.

I asked about the lunch special, advertised as being $5, and she said it's chicken with rice and peas. I asked if there was a vegetarian option and she said they have veggie stew (which looked like frozen mixed vegetables - peas, corn, carrots, green beans - with some sauce), and a soy stew (possibly veggie chicken or beef). I said I'd try the soy stew and callalloo. When she rang me up, she charged me an extra $2, because apparently, chicken is the only item in the $5 lunch special. I complained because she didn't tell me that when I asked about a veg option for the lunch special and she got defensive, saying that the lunch special sign in front of me said only chicken (which it did not), so she only charged me $5. The lady then got on her cell phone and just walked around the (tiny) restaurant, talking away, not even acknowledging us when we left.

The soy stew was mediocre but the callalloo was fantastic. I'm not too eager to eat here again, but if I do, I'll probably just get a huge portion of the callalloo, along with some fried plantains, which were also good.
