We stopped here for lunch on the way back from the Iron Range. I had to ask the typical questions at Mexican joints in order to find out what's vegan. Turns out the rice is made with chicken stock but the beans don't have any lard in them. So I ordered a plate of vegetable fajitas, hold the rice, with beans, and corn tortillas (hold the sour cream on the side and cheese on the beans). A little convoluted, of course, but I've found this is the way it goes in most Mexican joints.

The chips and salsa was really tasty and the veggies in the vegetable fajitas were fantastic! There was a wide variety of veggies — mushrooms, peppers, zucchini, onions, and more— and they were cooked just right in a delicious chile-lime marinade. Wrapping them with some beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole in corn tortillas made great tacos.

I have to figure out that marinade. It was so good!

This was a welcome spot on a road trip in southwestern Minnesota. We had considered stopping at Subway, but we thought we might like to see whether we could support this little local sandwich shop. Turns out they have build-your-own sandwich options and a couple of tasty vegan wraps -- the folks behind the counter even let me take a peek at the ingredients!

I had a spinach wrap stuffed with lots of fresh and tasty veggies. My partner had the tomato basil wrap and a latte with soy milk.

Pizza Ranch in Pipestone, Minnesota

Options were looking slim when we rolled into Pipestone to visit a pow wow and the Pipestone National Monument. We stayed at the Calumet Inn, which is right next door to the Pizza Ranch. I made a call and found that their crust is vegan -- the folks behind the counter read the ingredients to me over the phone.

We ordered the Prairie pizza (mushrooms, onions, black and green olives, and green peppers) and added spinach, tomatoes, and jalapeños. They were happy to leave off the cheese. And we had a salad bar.

The pizza was pretty tasty, though the mushrooms came from a can. And the salad bar options were fairly limited. Given the options, though, this made for a fine meal!

What a treat in the morning in a small town in southeastern Minnesota! We had coffee and lefse with lingonberry preserves. The lefse was so tasty we ordered a second round!

This was a fine place for supper in a small town in southeastern Minnesota. After calling around I confirmed that their pizza dough and sauce was vegan, and they were happy to make us a pie stacked high with tasty veggies (see the picture). The salad bar was impressive, too, with lots of fresh veggies and some delicious fruit for dessert.

This is a fantastic place to eat in St. Cloud. They have a bunch of options in a special vegetarian section of the menu and most of it can be made vegan.

I had a delicious veggie tagine with a thick and flavorful tomato sauce. It came with some tasty couscous on the side. I'd asked for it super spicy and they delivered -- they even gave me some ground habanero on the side in case I wanted it even hotter!

I would definitely come here again.

The Depot Tavern in Twin Cities, Minnesota

On Friday night I met some folks for dinner at The Depot Tavern in downtown Minneapolis. This place is owned by the folks who run First Avenue and 7th Street Entry, and it's located right next to each.

On the upside, the Depot has a number of vegan options, and they're all clearly marked. Most of the vegan stuff is bar food. They have vegan onion rings, mock duck tacos, a tempeh B.L.T., a veggie burger, a salad, and a soup.

I opted for the veggie burger—they call it the "Red Beans and Rice Veggie Burger". I'm sorry to report that the Red Beans and Rice Veggie Burger isn't very good.

The first problem is that it was terribly bland. Even with lots of condiments (the vegan mayo pictured and some mustard I added later) the thing came up short in flavor. The second problem is that it had a weird, overly-soft texture. So it's clear, I'm not on the hunt for veggie burgers that could fool me into thinking I'm eating a hamburger (Gardein's beefless burger comes close, by the way). This thing was just plain mushy, and that's unpleasant.

I'll avoid this veggie burger from here on out. I may make another visit to the Depot, though, since a friend had the tempeh B.L.T. and said it was fantastic.

I love this place. The buffet is superb, with lots of vegan options. Ordering off the menu is fantastic as well. The menu has vegan options listed. My favorites are geda-gudi (a tasty bean soup), jogi-tarkari (a tomato based vegetable curry), and veggie momos.

Fasika in Twin Cities, Minnesota

Fasika serves the best Ethiopian food in the Twin Cities. I come all the time for the outstanding vegan options (all the vegetarian items on the menu are also vegan).

My go-to order lately is the "vege-sampler". You get lots of different lentil dishes along with beets, greens, salad, and green beans and carrots. Everything is very well seasoned and the flavors are to die for.

Two things to know.

First, you can get a half and half order and try two main dishes if you don't get the sampler. When I go this route, I opt for the cabbage (atkilt) and greens (gomen). I'll often add a side of spicy lentils (misr key wot) as well.

Second, the tea is extraordinary. While the tea bag is typical black tea, you get a pot of water along with it that's infused with herbs and spices!

Galactic Pizza in Twin Cities, Minnesota

Great place! Lots of well marked vegan options and delicious food! I had the Greek salad, the vegan Paul Bunyan Pizza, and the vegan cheesecake. The salad had a somewhat creamy and really easy dressing on it, though I would have liked to see a few more veggies on it (onions and tomatoes and so on). I couldn't resist trying the Paul Bunyan pizza—wild rice, morel mushrooms, and vegan sausage on pizza? How could it get more Minnesotan? The crust was nice and crispy (this is a change from Pizza Luce) and the vegan sausage was delicious (I asked and they said they begin with Lightlife and season it themselves). Next time, though, I'll go for a more traditional pie. The thing that really blew my socks off was the vegan cheesecake. You must go and try this! It's really creamy and dense and delicious.

I will certainly be back to Galactic. I'm sad that I don't live in their delivery zone, but it's a fun bike ride from me to them.

Groundswell Coffee in Twin Cities, Minnesota

Groundswell has a few vegan options: some delicious tempeh tacos, vegan chocolate sriracha cupcakes, and vegan banana bread. It's definitely worth a visit for those things alone. They have a couple of things that can be made vegan: banana bread french toast for brunch and flatbreads that have no cheese. These are both really expensive for what you get.

At Little Szechuan, I'm a fan of the spicy Szechuan tofu and the green beans. Beware the dan dan noodles—though you can get them without meat, the noodles are egg noodles.

Ngon in Twin Cities, Minnesota

At Ngon I've had tofu lettuce wraps, Cỏm Tấm (without fish sauce and with tofu), and mock duck. All of them are very tasty. My favorite, though, is the vegetarian version of Hủ Tiếu/Mì (with rice noodles). Order that and you get a big bowl of delicious veggie and noodle soup. They'll add tofu to it too if you ask.

This is a great place for vegan pizza. I typically get the fresh veggie pizza, either with rinotta or with just the sauce and veggies. I also like the rustler and the lil' Gracie. The garden salad is really good too—lots of fresh veggies and you can order it with a superb white balsamic dressing. Be sure to mention that you're vegan when you order the salad and they'll get you bread with the right kind of spread on it.

There's nothing like a weekend morning that begins at Seward Cafe. This morning I had what has become my usual—beans and rice (I prefer the black beans) with broccoli and ranchero sauce (you have to order those separately). At the condiment bar I load up on hot sauce and minced jalapeños. I usually get a bottomless cup of tea, too, and have a little too much Irish breakfast tea. The vegan pastries are tasty as well. Today I shared a tasty jupiter bar and the tahini almond cookie is good too.

Every doughnut I've had here has been fantastic. They are really creative with their daily special doughnuts. They also have really tasty coffee and they sell locally made vegan ice cream.

Dun-Well has become a must stop for me when I'm in Brooklyn! I only wish they had an outpost in MInnesota...

I thought s'Nice was fine for a quick lunch stop, but it wasn't fantastic. I got the smoked tempeh wrap. The tempeh was tasty but the wrap was straight-out-of-the-refridgerator cold. I really wish the tempeh (at least) was warm. The flavors really would have stood out then!

Wi-fi was really spotty, by the way. Boo!, since I had work to do too.

Excellent vegan ice cream! I had the peanut butter and chocolate on a sugar cone and it was a great treat on a hot day. Get some if you can!

Outstanding vegan friendly Indian food coming out of a little food truck. The chana masala and the chana saag are some of the best I've had. The naan is delicious and vegan. Who could ask for more?

By the way, if the daily combo meal has a non-vegan selection you can always ask to have the vegan version. They'll leave off whatever has animal products in it and give you more of the rest!

Homegrown Smoker in Portland, Oregon

Just get the combo so you can try lots of stuff - the tempeh "ribs" and the smoked Beyond Meat chicken-less strips are the proteins to go for.

As for the sides, I thought the greens, the mac and vegan cheese, the cole slaw, and the sweet potato fries were really well done.

Native Bowl in Portland, Oregon

I tried the Mississippi bowl on the recommendation of the fellow behind the counter, and it didn't disappoint.

The BBQ soy curls were very nicely cooked - some crispness from the griddle complimented by a delicious smoky tang from the BBQ sauce. The rice at the bottom of the bowl was coated with a tasty vegan ranch sauce and the veggie and cole slaw added some nice freshness and crunch to the dish.

I'll definitely be back for more!

Native Foods in Portland, Oregon
Mar 29

rating star

I can't say enough great things about Native Foods. They're serving up delicious, healthy vegan food and people are coming in droves to eat it.

I think my favorite thing to get here is the Oklahoma Bacon Cheeseburger. You get tasty seitan piled high and topped with plant based bacon and delicious non-dairy cheddar. There's some rich and smoky BBQ sauce to bring it all together. Just recollecting it is making me hungry!

Really, though, when you come here you can't go wrong. I've tried the Native Nachos, the Chicken Run Ranch Burger, and the Scorpion Burger. They're all fantastic.

If you like things spicy, remember to grab some of the chupacabra salsa to heat up whatever you're having! (It's over by the drink fountain.)

Portobello Vegan Trattoria in Portland, Oregon
Mar 29

rating star

We had an outstanding dinner here!

You have to try the beet tartare and the pizza arrabiata. Both were excellent.

The gnocchi was very good - gnocchi should be like little clouds and these were a bit dense. The delicious tomato and basil sauce made up for it, though.

I have to say I wasn't terribly impressed with the portobello steak. I was hoping the demi glacé would have been richer and more flavorful and that there was more depth to the flavor of the mushroom.

I want that beet tartare right now! Soooo good!

Great selection of vegan doughnuts! I had one of the apple fritters and it was incredibly tasty - the best vegan apple fritter I've ever had.
