Atomix Cafe in Chicago, Illinois

I love going to Atomix!
Things to get here:
Mushroom burger
Muffins/Cookies/Banana bread
Bagels with veggie cream cheese (they use tofutti!).

They also do custom sandwiches with the option of vegan cheese, and a bunch of different flavors of hummus.

I was excited to try the soy milkshake, but it turned out to be not that great. The Diner has way better milkshakes.

I've never been able to find/make a good vegan brownie, but this place blew my mind! Their vegan brownies are gluten free and made with BEANS! So incredibly delicious, not dry or bland like other vegan brownies I've had. Also, the decorations are really cute.

Earwax Cafe in Chicago, Illinois

For vegans, I was hoping Earwax would be better, but it's just decent. I had only been there once before it closed and re-opened, but my experience was pretty much the same. The food was pretty greasy and soggy both times. The second time I visited, after the re-opening, I had a smoothie, which was pretty bland (I'd rather go to Jamba Juice), and a seitan ruben. The fries were limp, and the reuben was just okay. For similar food I'd rather go to Handlebar.

However, I did have the jerk seitan pita with mango salsa, which was really great.
They're cash only, but there is an ATM in the back.

They have a juice bar, which I appreciate since I'm trying to be healthy, though it's so hard with all the delicious looking food stations! I wish they didn't put yogurt in the smoothies, but at least the juices are vegan, and they offer a lot of boosts, like spirulina and flax.

I had the vegetable soup (vegan) and it was very good. In all, it seemed a little overpriced, but not too bad. And there aren't that many vegan options at the food stations, though the stir fry station does offer a vegan mushroom based broth.

Green Zebra in Chicago, Illinois

I had an amaziiinggg dinner at Green Zebra.

To start, I had the couscous salad, which was a little bland, so I wasn't too hopeful for the rest of the meal. But MAN, I had the black bean dumplings and they were AMAZING. I was even a little sad when I got to the last one. My mom had the mushroom risotto and she said it was really tasty (it looked pretty too). We shared the chickpea tanjin, which really good too. Like, REALLY good.

But the best was definitely last. We ordered the only vegan dessert, a coconut sorbet with tapioca. I doubt anyone would be able to tell that the coconut sorbet was vegan. I also had the coconut oolong tea with it, which made it even better.

The bill was really high--$90 for two people. But we both agreed that it was worth every cent.

Open until 2am on weekends!
In my experience, it really depends on what you order at Handlebar.
My favorite item is the buffalo "chicken" (seitan) wrap. It's really amazing!
I had the seitan bbq burger in the past and it was definitely not as good.

They make the ice cream with dry ice, which is cool, but in terms of taste I'd rather go out and buy a pint of Coconut Bliss or So Delicious.

Joy Yee's Noodles in Chicago, Illinois

rating star

I have mixed feelings about Joy Yee.
For one, our food came out super fast--like under five minutes fast. For me that's not actually a good thing, because it means the food probably was microwave or reheated.
I had the tofu and mushrooms, which definitely supported that theory. The tofu was chewy and pretty awful and the mushrooms were undercooked.
However, I ordered the fresh seaweed salad as an appetizer, and it was probably the best I've ever had. If I come back, it'll be for that alone.

Kramer's Health Foods in Chicago, Illinois

This is a well stocked grocery store with tons of supplements. However, I've been disappointed with their food selection. I've gotten at least two expired items there by accident (the second time I realized it before I paid for it), and I had a vegan cookie from there that was rock solid (maybe it had expired as well...). The grooming products are a little better, but not much. I purchased a deodorant there and when I got home and opened it, I found it was all dried up. Not good.
Upstairs, they have a little cafe where you can get vegetarian food and smoothies. I ordered a veggie burger here and I was disappointed to find that it was just a microwaved boca burger.
I wouldn't recommend it, unless you are downtown already and absolutely need something.

This is a busy place in Chinatown where they have communal hotpots, though if you're vegan you'll probably skip that. They have a huge amount of veggie options, as well as tofu, and they even have a faux chicken appetizer made out of tofu with some kind of stuffing (it would be enough for one person's main course). They serve a complementary spicy fresh cabbage appetizer with peanut oil that was DELICIOUS. The rest of the food was pretty good, but not amazing. I'll probably visit again since it seems to be one of the better Chinatown restaurants.

Kind of expensive, but the food is delicious and very healthy. You have to ask what's vegan, but the staff is very nice.

Molly's Cupcakes in Chicago, Illinois

By far the best vegan cupcakes I've had in the city. The cake is super dense and moist, and the icing isn't too sweet. I only wish they had more vegan options-right now you can only choose between chocolate and vanilla cake and icing, which is strange to me because the cashier told me the owner is vegan.

This place makes an awesome thin crust pizza with tofu, veggies and daiya cheese!

Newleaf Natural Grocery in Chicago, Illinois

This is a tiny place on a quiet street in Rogers Park. They have a really cool selection of natural food and beauty products and a small selection of fresh produce.

Quesadilla La Reina del Sur in Chicago, Illinois

Really good smoothies! They put cilantro in it, which was deliciously unexpected.
They also offer unusual ingredients like cactus and mock sheep.
The food was good, but greasy. Also, the place seemed a little dirty and we had to wait a long time for service (they were really busy).

I had the vegetarian stew here (made with vegetable oil, not butter), and it was delicious. For some reason the food/atmosphere doesn't look all that impressive to me (maybe it's trying too hard), but the taste is there.

Skewerz in Chicago, Illinois

The food is light and fresh, which is great. They use simple seasonings, which are really good and flavorful. I had a tofu skewer, and a grilled vegetable skewer. The tofu was a little soft for me, but it was seasoned nicely and the vegetables were perfect. I also had a corn on the cob, which was great.

Even for people who have zero gardening knowledge, this place is a wonderland. They have a huge selection of plants-from cacti to fresh herbs, funky and chic decorations and planters, and other cool miscellaneous stuff. I bought six different herbs here, and they have all been thriving, and are really flavorful.

Sultan's Market in Chicago, Illinois
Jul 22 11

rating star

Go to Sultans if you want something cheap, quick and tasty.
What I love about Sultans:
Amazing salad bar with all kinds of goodies.
Crispy and fluffy falafel
Vegan desserts
Small stock of hard to find middle eastern grocery items for sale like fava beans and halva

I don't recommend the falafel sandwich though--the falafel gets a little soggy from the hummus and just doesn't taste right. Get them as a side instead.

Sweet Cakes Bakery in Chicago, Illinois

This place is secretly vegan, you have to ask the person at the counter which things are vegan because they don't label them. The people there are always very friendly too.
The vegan scones and mocha mini cupcakes are amazing!!
Sometimes I've gotten things that are just okay, others are great. They also vegetarian and vegan picnic boxes in the summer.

I love this place for vegan goodies like ice cream and cookies (They have Uncle Eddie's cookies, the best in the whole world!!)

They have healthy stuff too, of course.

I had my first mock meat here as a new vegetarian, and it was a great first impression. I had the grilled chicken salad, and I remember being slightly freaked out at how convincing the taste was to real chicken.
