Annapurna in Chicago, Illinois

rating star

This place has less ambiance than a Subway and the food isn't as good as you'll find on the rest of Devon. BUT it's also a fraction of the price you'll find on the rest of Devon, and it's still decent food (if a bit oily). If you find yourself in the neighborhood and short on cash, Annapurna is the solution.

As others said, it's all in what you order. It's almost guaranteed to be overpriced, but that's to be expected in Water Tower Place. However, the selection is fantastic and I've had some really tasty and surprisingly healthy meals here.

Wow. This place is tied for the best meal I've ever had in my life. I think we had 9 courses... all of them were excellent, but the spaetzle really stood out. The cocktails were equally amazing, and the ice cream tasting was perfect (basil ice cream, who knew!?).

My only complaint would be that the service was a little inconsistent. The place was packed (seriously, the tables are very close together--you will get to know the people next to you), so maybe they were just a little flustered, but I feel like there's not much excuse for that with the price tag. The food more than made up for it, though!

You're pretty much just paying them to do a really cool science experiment with your dessert here. If you want great ice cream, this isn't the place to go, but that's not the point anyway. It's not just anywhere that you can get a nondairy ice cream with this many flavor options, and then have it colored to match your outfit.

Morseland in Chicago, Illinois

Morseland is one of Rogers Park's secret little gems. The bar selections are good, the staff is very friendly, and there's usually some good specials. The live music and djs are as eclectic as the neighborhood itself, but rarely overwhelming for those who come to chat. The pub food is better than average and served super late. Aside from the entrees, most of the menu items are meant to be shared; the hummus platter serves four, and the sweet-hot fries come piled high. Though I was skeptical, I can now recommend the beer battered mac'n'cheese, but it's their homemade veggie burgers that I crave over and over again. They're small, come in threes, and combine sweet potato and black beans (it's a little mushy but you'll get over it). It's a good place to meet up with friends, share a plate, and wash it down with a beer while listening to music or playing a round of pool.

Mysore is a perfect alternative to the Devon buffet places. The lunch specials here are reasonable and the portions are large enough for two people to share. Don't miss the potato dosai; these are some of the best in town.

If there's one place that I expected to have vegetarian pho, it's Tank. Alas, I will have to keep making it at home, but there's still plenty of good food on the menu.

Pick Me Up Cafe in Chicago, Illinois

I go here almost every weekend. Almost without fail, no matter who the server is, they will forget one person's order for about half an hour after everyone else has their food (and on busy nights that itself takes an eternity). Who knows why, but it's never once made any of us hesitate a second on returning the next weekend. I'll wait days for that buffalo tofu, I don't care. Don't miss the homemade soups, the vegan chili, chili cheese fries, or the vegan mac'n'cheese (approved by my carnivore friends), or the mushroom gravy on the mashed potatoes, the hummus, or the gnocchi... you get the idea. There's no better place to go at 4am on Saturday morning after you've left the clubs, not to imply that I don't go there for lunch during the week, either.

The food is good, the beer selection is good, but...

We have to talk about the fries. The tempura battered wasabi fries USED to be some of the best french fries you could find in the city of Chicago. Then, I don't know what happened, but they took them off the menu for a while, and then they changed them. They are terrible now. I don't know how they even managed to screw it up so bad, but it's a shame.

Anyway, get the delicious tofu crepes and some beignets for dessert instead.
