Cafe 53 has excellent vegan options in Hyde Park. Yay! Their soy milk is organic, i.e. not
Silk which is made by Dean Foods. They have a world class fresh oven baked #1 vegan veggie sandwich, vegan hummus falafel pita, vegan peanut butter bar, and vegan brownies. Their sorbet flavors are excellent and the waffle cone is vegan as well. The owner is expanding his menu to include even more vegan yummy food!
When this place first opened up in 2009 I wanted to support it and went quite often even though I though it was overpriced. But then I ate the collard green wrap and got food poisoning. It was horrible! I never went back again.
This place is a ray of light on the south side! The food was made with lots of love and patience. The vegan mac and cheese was the best I have ever had. I also thoroughly enjoyed the cabbage, kale salad, and the banana strawberry cobbler for dessert. The place is 100% vegan.
I spoke the owner about considering buying organic soy milk, rather the silk non-organic he was carrying and he seemed receptive to it and asked me what brands I liked. Then I asked him to please consider having one vegan option on the menu and he got really defensive telling me that anything on the menu can be made vegan. I expressed to him that I do not like to order an item that I have to customize vegan style because then I am creating a demand for that particular item. He then got an attitude with me and said that this is not a vegan restaurant and that vegan restaurants don't do well. I was only asking for one vegan option not that the whole restaurant go vegan. I ordered a soy latte which was terrible because of the silk non organic soymilk. The woman that made my soy latte was rude as well.
vegie fried spring rolls, tom kha soup with vegies, and summer roll are good but the tofu pad thai and curry dish are not very good at all.
don't get the tofu dish they do not know how to prepare tofu. overpriced but they did have soy milk for coffee.
I had the daily special number #2 which was a salad with a yummy green vegan dressing, white rice, beans and plantain casserole. It was delicious! Plus the vegan soy strawberry smoothie. Everything was super including the two servers who were very sweet and patient with me and my rudimentary knowledge of Spanish.
Delicious salad in the mall. A haven for a vegan in a mall and in San Juan.
This was one of the worst vegetarian restaurants that I have ever been to. Everything was overpriced for tiny portions of horrible tasting food. The employees are clearly underpaid by the owner. They have no clue how to prepare vegan food, especially tofu which they simply took out of the container and put it on a plate. Trying to profit off of the vegetarian trend with no understanding of vegetarian cuisine or philosophy. Gives other vegetarian restaurants a bad name.
