Yummy vegan brunch, now served every day, which gives this location a definate advantage over the one on Valencia. Enjoyed all the breakfast things I tried (southwest tofu scramble, pancakes, sausage pastry, crepes), except the pesto tofu scramble.. too mushy. Tasty sandwiches and salads too. Nice little patio out back.
Yes, this is a pricey place to eat, but one of the few vegan gourmet restaurants. As I learn to cook more and more vegan things, this is one place that can still impress me with their food. The entreés and dessert are the most exciting part to me, and if you skip drinking, it doesn't have to be a ridiculously priced meal. It's not always a huge amount of food, but I always leave feeling just the right amount full. The chocolate desserts are divine.
It's somewhat of a strange environment, but they have both vegetarian and vegan options. They have vegan crepes, enchiladas and a couple other things. The crepes were tasty, if a bit bland.
Beware, the workers seem a little flighty and once tried serving me potato salad (dairy) with my vegan crepe. I educated them on how serving something non-vegan with a vegan dish might not be the best idea.
pretty good food. one dish was really tasty, the other pretty good. most stuff could be made vegan (except curries). staff knew well what could be vegan. pretty decor. fast service. nothing completely exceptional but definitely good and will try it again.
i've always liked breadsmith.. they have great french bread, multigrain & raisin.. but then i found out their caramel pecan buns are vegan! oh my goodness, they are yummy. super highly recommended.
note for vegans: the bagels have honey.
initially they didn't have as much vegan things as i'd like, but they've improved. they always seem to have a couple vegan sweet things.. cookies, cupcakes, tarts, bars.. they usually seem to have a vegan soup or two. and i think some sandwiches can be made vegan.
could use a little more atmosphere.. like some art on the walls or something. though it does have tall airy ceilings and good light. and i like the idea of trying to do as much local as possible.
Tasty food. Fresh and flavorful ingredients. And the two entreés we tried each hade their own combination of tasty spices. And they had momos (tibetan dumplings) in addition to traditional indian appetizers. Vegan entreés were labled, but the breads were not (the poori and i think roti were vegan.. you should ask though). Good friendly service.
yummy pizza. many vegan options. they even have vegan mozzarella cheeze that melts (be careful, it's super melty-hot, fresh out of the oven). it's a little pricey, but more filling than i thought it would be. the atmosphere was kind of chaotic when we were there, as it was an open mic night.
just went there the other day. the person working said the only entree he could say certainly was vegan was the chana masala. despite having previously been told other things were vegan. but this guy seemed like he knew more what he was talking about..
mmm. the BIG bowl of soup is very delicious, especially with fried tofu. (they aren't kidding when they say BIG). and the mock duck sandwiches are also super yummy (vegans order it without butter). they make their own french bread for the sandwiches and it's like REAL french bread! it's light and crusty, but soft and not hard to bite into. It's vegan like all good french bread should be. Plus the people that work there are super nice.
Since people have been reviewing Java lately and I had a rating without a review,I thought perhaps I should explain my experience and why I gave it a poor review.
It is cheap and portions are good-sized. The service wasn't bad, but not amazing either. Most importantly though.. the food was so unimpressive. The fried veggies were bland and a little soggy. The iceberg lettuce didn't seem overly fresh.. and overall it was bland. I've had much better Middle Eastern food at pretty much any other Middle Eastern restaurant in the Twin Cities.
I decided to eat there on a whim, as I'd never tried it, yet live only blocks away. After the meal, I wished I'd picked somewhere else.
While it's not my favorite vietnamese restuarant, they do have a few things going for them.. they are willing to make most dishes vegan (though I don't know if they know the word vegan, so be sure to specify the things you don't want), they don't have issues with substitutions and they are conveniently located (for me).
Items you should be aware of that contain fish things unless you request otherwise: the Tofu or Mock Duck with Potatoes has oyster sauce in it, the Pad Thai & Basil Noodle dish contain fish sauce. There are probably a few other things, but these are what I remember right now.
although it's listed as just vegetarian friendly, there are a few vegan things as well. the falafel sandwich is the only thing i've had so far, but it is quite good. there is also at least a hummus sandwich and some cous cous dishes that are vegan.
in response to it being not vegan friendly: of the mexican food, i think the only things that can't be made vegan are the burritos & quesadillas, (because of the flour shell). anything with hard or soft corn shells are fine. this at least includes tacos, tostadas, enchiladas, nachos & taco salads. things can be made with beans or veggies (broccoli, cauliflower & carrots). i have no trouble filling myself up. it's not the most amazing mexican food, but a great late night option. plus they have crayons & paper table cloths to color on.
Good food, but not too amazing. Beautiful space with a koi pond and lots of art work. The restaurant was so big that sometimes it was difficult to find our server. Unfortunately we didn't realize that their curry has egg, but once we told them we didn't eat egg, they quickly replaced it with an egg-free version and were very nice about it. I don't know if I'd go out of my way to go back, but if I were hungry in St. Paul I might stop by.
when i went there after they first opened, i was told everything was cooked in ghee. perhaps they've changed that? if you don't know and you're vegan, i'd ask. we basically had to get up and leave.
tried the weekend brunch recently. was pretty tasty. nice to have more vegan breakfast options. for vegans they have tofu scramble, a portobello florentine, biscuits and gravy and i think a breakfast burrito? would be nice to have a sweet option too, but still anything more is nice.
tried the sunday brunch recently. for vegans, they offer tofu scramble with hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, a portobello florentine and i think a breakfast burrito (not sure on that one). not bad. nice to have more brunch options. only sundays at this location.
too bad they play all that jazz..
While they don't have a lot of vegan options, their soups and breads are always yummy. Unfortunately no vegan desserts. It's a nice place for lunch.
Had 2 tasty pizzas, thanks to their current Buy One Get One Free Deal on mondays and tuesdays.
Tried the Berkley Cheese and a build my own of eggplant, artichoke and olive.
I was really excited to try the Daiya cheese. I thought it was tasty, but not quite the magical vegan cheese I was hoping for. Still a nice alternative and great to see a chain with vegan cheese and crusts. They put the cheese on below the rest of the toppings, and I think it would firm up a bit better if they had it on top.
They have a nice variety of toppings. The crust is a little chewy but tasty.
I got take-out and it was pretty fast and still warm by the time I got home.
Cute little diner. Tasty food. Lots of vegan options (though not as many for breakfast..). They have a menu up at menupages.com, but not everything that can be made vegan is listed as such on that site.. still it gives you a good idea of what they've got. The only things that look as if they're unable to be made vegan are things with veg bacon, omelettes and french toast.
I tried a burger and the crocque madame. Both were tasty. And deserts were delicious.
Tasty Vietnamese food. I tried the summer rolls and the lemongrass seitan. Great flavor. Cute little place. Friendly staff. I wish i were in New York longer to try more of their food.
the cauliflower/peanut soup and the jamaican vegetable patties were amazing. highly recommended.
we actually met moby. as he was leaving, he gave us his table and made some recommendations. yay! the sandwich was good, but nothing special. the deserts were amazing. we had strawberry shortcake and chocolate cheesecake. both favorites. i think it was the best vegan cheesecake i've had, though very rich. the tea is also very yummy. especially liked the flavored teas. they put bits of the flavor in the actual tea, rather than just a syrup. both the almond and raspberry were good.
I was really unexcited by this place. There weren't that many vegan options. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't very interesting or flavorful. It worked harder at being healthy than being tasty. The carrot cake was it's only saving grace.
Yummy vegan thai restuarant we happened to stumble upon while visiting Seattle. Friendly people, tasty food, nice decor. They had vegan wontons and mock meats. Definately recommend.
Very tasty sandwiches with lots of flavor. My only complaint is the oiliness. It probably wouldn't be so bad if they didn't fry the buns.
Yummy breakfast, especially the french toast with raspberries and homemade whipped cream. The tofu scramble wasn't super exciting. The place looked like it could use a fresh coat of paint, but the waiter was super nice.

The best thing about this place is the BBQ tofu springrolls. At first, I thought.. BBQ springrolls? that's just weird.. But no! It's delicious. That's about the only thing I got excited about. Oh and they have yummy fancy drinks.
