Demuths in Somerset, England

Demuths is an upscale, slightly pricey restaurant. That being the case, their dishes are full of delicate flavour and they have several vegan options. Their pea and mint corgette fritters are served with beetroot puree and basil tzatziki and are garnished with herbs (the addition of fresh dill creates an unexpected accent on the palate). The stickey toffee pudding is accompanied by a pear compote, and the soya ice cream is the best I have ever tasted. Nuff said!

Galactic Pizza in Twin Cities, Minnesota

Galactic is cool as all hell! The staff are great, the décor is retro, the philosophy is environmentally sensitive and the food is absolutely delectable. They make vegetarian and vegan options of almost all their pizzas, using the finest soy cheese as well as making their own vegan hemp pesto. Their perfect pizza crust creates a great base for what goes on top. The pièce de résistance is the vegan cheesecake which they source from a company called Muddy Paws, a local bakery (http://www.muddypawscheesecake.com). Inside, the restaurant is cozy and retro, with a comfortable sofa area at the back. In summer they provide outside seating under grass canopies.

This Vietnamese deli is small, family run and serves a wonderful mix of sandwiches (including mock duck and curried mock duck), tofu and mock meat broken rice plates, noodles salads and soups. Their vegan options are so delicious that it has become a popular haunt for hungry herbivores eager to find a wholesome and cheap option. They also have a deli counter where you can pick up sandwiches if you are on the run. It is easy to have a filling lunch for less than $6. Highly recommended.

Tao Natural Foods in Twin Cities, Minnesota

With vintage diner seating in the entrance Tao has a retro feel to it. The restaurant has a store at the back, selling all things natural from soaps to vitamins and everything in between. The café is quite pricey with entrées starting at $10. It serves an interesting choice of health juices and smoothies, or you can just make up your own. Their veggie burger is delicious, made with whole wheat bread and garnished with alfalfa sprouts and vegan mayonnaise. The vegan pie they serve daily is also a treat. The staff are happy to modify dairy dishes to make them vegan.
