I don't live in Pittsburgh but I've visited, and going to Sree's always stuck out in my mind. The tomato dal I had there was top-notch and I was impressed that I could get an awesome vegan meal very inexpensively in the heart of downtown. I'm visiting Pittsburgh again soon and I look very forward to eating there when I go.
I eat at the Westheimer and Dunvale location of Fadi's, and their food is FANTASTIC! Wonderful vegan dishes including sauteed eggplant, mixed vegetables, rice pilaf (often with cashews and dill), tabouli, baba ghanoush, hummus and pitas, falafel plate or sandwich (be sure to ask for no tsaziki sauce, I'm pretty sure it contains yogurt,) delicious salads (some contain cheese, but will plainly tell you if they do or not) and a GREAT lentil soup (I'm addicted to it.) All food is cooked with trans-fat free oil. I go at least once a week. The service is friendly and with such a variety, I never get tired of it. I take everyone from out of town there to enjoy a tasty, low-key dinner.
Probably the best vegetarian Asian restaurant I have eaten at in a long time. Don't miss the buffet, which happens on weekday lunch and all day on Saturday and Sunday (it's a little pricey, but it's worth the splurge.) They feature vegan sushi on the weekends. You can also have the smoothies made with soy milk for a vegan option.
Souper Salad's great for a quick, cheap, simple vegan meal. With a huge fresh salad bar with lots of veggies, you can make yourself a truly formidable salad. Most buffet items are clearly labeled whether they're vegetarian or vegan (the cornbread, I believe, is a vegan bread option.) You can also get baked potatoes and sweet potatoes. At least one vegetarian soup is always featured daily (sometimes it is also vegan.)
It's so rare that I can go and enjoy a vegan meal AND pound some brews at the same time, but Mad Dogs succeeds at a place to do both. You can start off with some nachos complete with Boca chili, and I had the KING of all veggie burgers there (complete with vegan cheese AND mayo, and Heinz beans.) Fantastic variety of beer, open late, and waiters and waitresses in kilts. A fun, vegan-friendly option on San Antonio's Riverwalk.
