The restaurant is tucked into an area in Highland Park where you wouldn't expect to see a veggie/vegan restaurant. The food is okay but oddly enough the service is horrible. You come in and pretty much have to get your own menu and then it might take a while to get someone to take your order...when they do you might find out that some things you were thinking of ordering aren't available for the day. The food wasn't bad at all but I'm not sure if the owners have no experience in the restaurant business but when you do get their attention they are nice.
In terms of location and atmosphere and maybe even creativity-Fatty's is a decent place to go. However, the amount you pay for the food you get is incredibly disappointing. The concoctions are not all that crafty, except the dessert menu, and the taste is lacking. I've given this place several tries to let it grow on me...and all that was bringing me back was the vegan apple pie, which after this last dining experience has also changed...so now I have absolutely no reason to come back-I'm actually relieved. The hours are incredibly inconvenient and you get the feeling that the wait staff would rather not serve you.
I was waiting in anticipation for the day that Flore would open so with bated breath I finally tried it. I was pleased to find a non-Thai influenced vegan restaurant in the area. The menu is varied and the food is good. I arrived at a time that seemed to not be as busy as I have seen it to be so my service was excellent and the food was ready incredibly fast-without sparing taste! I had the Tempeh Tu-No Melt and it was great! My boyfriend had the Eastsider Tacos and loved the cilantro cream that came with them! The portions are a good size (in the healthy sense) and the prices are reasonable. The desserts are a little too sweet for me but overall incredibly happy to have a tasty vegan restaurant in this neighborhood!
I went here when they first opened and were not done redecorating...at first I thought it was great...however I discovered after going several times that some of the food has MSG and the pre-made chicken has whey in it. I have seen them bring in the food they buy and I have seen these products in Asian grocers and most pre-made meat in the Asian markets have whey protein, you need to check to make sure. They also have a picture of items they supposedly use but discovered this was not the case. On several occasions I have asked what kind of syrup or soyanaise they were using to only find out that the wait staff had no clue and when prodded more, discovered they were not vegan products. I have witnessed other customers suffer from food allergies even though the menu and wait staff had said there were no allergens in the dish...only to ask the cook and discover that somehow those items had found there way into the dish. When confronted about this several times, the wait staff seemed to not have any idea of what was going on in the back nor did my waitress know what whey was when I asked her. Here's a real case of eat at your own risk, but if you aren't vegan it's fine. It's just dangerously misleading to those of us who are vegan.
I went here due to hearing raves about this from a friend of mine who isn't vegetarian but her husband is. I was excited and wanted to give it a fair chance and ordered about 5 different dishes. I have been to quite a few vegan/vegetarian restaurants and pretty much most of the Los Angeles area Chinese veggie places and this was the worst. The food was all drenched in oil even though I specifically asked to use little oil in everything. The dishes that weren't fried were still pretty greasy compared to other places. Overall, in comparison with other places the dishes were unhealthy and lacked taste. I ended up trying to wipe off oil from my food before I ate it. I was incredibly disappointed as I had heard such a great rave about it. To give the place some credit, the service was good and the atmosphere was fine.
I went here for my birthday hoping to please meat eaters and vegans alike...the meatatarians were stoked but I was left not all that excited about the food. I was less excited about the open kitchen that left me smelling like fried flesh foods when I left.
Several personal favorites...the fried crispy chicken, lettuce wraps with pigeon, the ice cream type cone devices wrapped in seaweed, and the fact that they serve brown rice!!!
The service is fast but the food isn't the best tasting for the price. I ordered the philly cheesesteak and it left me with this not so pleasant feeling. The fries are okay and I would probably only come here again if I had no other options in the area.
I've tried to like this place, especially after all the raves from friends..but I've went here 3 times and each time get more disappointed. The staff is friendly but the food is a little overpriced for what you are getting. I did enjoy the lentil walnut pate, which is saying a lot since I normally hate walnuts but that was about it. I took 2 newly converted vegans with me and they disliked it even more than me...
Okay let me now just say that this is the best vegan ice cream I have ever tasted in my life (and from friends opinions the best dairy as well). I have tried all the store brands and these just do not compare! First of all, Tai the owner will make any flavor you request. I have seen flavors like Caramel Bacon, Whiskey and Coffee, Sea salt and olive oil and these have all sold well! On the vegan end...I often make requests of him and my favorites are thus far, vegan cookie dough, vegan mint and cocoa nibs, vegan chocolate orange, vegan rocky road (yup rocky road that is vegan friendly), pear lychee sorbet, vegan blueberry cheesecake. The best part is that since it is made from scratch (he won't tell anyone his secrets-I've tried) he knows exactly what goes into it and will tell you that it's a healthy treat at about 120 calories. Better yet, one scoop at his shop is equal to 2 and you can mix and match...and refills are only $1 more!!! Not to mention that if you can't decide on what to get...he'll patiently let you try all 18 flavors...but beware..if you are into plain chocolate and plain vanilla--you won't find it there. This place is great for flavors you wouldn't think of and falling in love with a flavor you didn't know existed!
Fabulous food, fabulous service, fabulous portion sizes, and all for fabulous prices! There is a wide variety of food to choose from and they are fast there! I have never been disappointed with the food and delivery is a great option! Try the meal combinations with some brown rice-so filling so healthy and so yum!
All of their items can be made with either cow's cheese or vegan cheese. I really want to try their eggplant parmigiana sandwich, veggie lasagna, manicotti, fettucini alfredo, and cannoli, but every time I go I can't help but order their pizzas. That's Amore provided my first 24" pizza. It was so big we had trouble getting it inside my car. The Potato Rosemary pizza with Bechamel sauce, rosemary mash potato and artichokes was amazing, and the vegan cheese actually melted. Not melted like vegan cheese kind of melting, but melted like melted.
Pastas: $5.95 $9.95
Sandwiches: $6.95 - $7.95
Pizzas (depending on size and toppings): $7.95 - $31.95
I love this place...so even now that I live 30 minutes away-I still drive down here to get their hot and sour soup, sesame chicken, sauteed green beans, peking duck (the best), and their awesome brown rice!!! The food is really good and you can tell them if you want little oil, less salt, etc. and they really listen! You leave feeling satisfied and healthy-unlike some restaurants where you feel weighted down. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is quite peaceful. Only thing is they only accept cash-luckily they will kindly direct you to an ATM nearby. This place is the best (and only) vegan restaurant for the area...!
I was so ecstatic to find this place on vegguide..I've been looking for another middle eastern location that was good..other than driving down to Long Beach. The portions are huge and there's unlimited pita bread and hummus for you to eat while you decide on what you want. The lentil soup or salad that comes with the entrees are both delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful with any questions you might have. I got the falafel with tabbouleh and that was great. Unfortunately we were so full off pita and the oh so creamy hummus we all had to get to go boxes for the plate of food we barely touched!!!
I lived in Santa Cruz for years and only started eating at Dharma's in the last years that I lived there, much to my lost. The food here is great with such a wide variety of choices. There are many dressings to choose from and the salads are delicious. I tend to stick to the soup, salad, and rice but the Nada Chicken Burrito is my husband's favorite. The Breakfast Burrito is a winner every time with everyone I take there. Don't miss out on the fabulous soy shakes in great flavors! I would eat here everyday if I still lived there but then I would be broke!
I have given this place many a chance and have found it to be lacking in practically all areas. The food consistently comes out to the tables lukewarm and very greasy. The atmosphere is definitely upbeat and very 'Santa Cruz' but the restaurant has servers that seem too cool to be waiting on you and more interested in socializing. If you want food, eat at Dharma's but if you want a place to hang out for a while with music blaring-this is the place.
I was in town visiting from the West coast and was extremely excited to make a special stop in my itinerary to visit this place...however, I was not that impressed. I took with me 5 other vegans (from various countries) and we weren't all that impressed. I think they were impressed with an idea of a vegan bakery but for taste...I think there were some things I had tried that I've made better myself. However, the staff was all friendly and the little place was filled with happy snackers.
