Don't know how the deli was a couple years ago, but their sandwiches are damn good, as is the hot bar. They also do smoothies, cold salad bar, and bakery items.

No-waste dining if you're eating in.

this place rules. went there for breakfast the last couple days in town. good coffee, and tons of vegan choices. they say anything on the menu can be made vegan. sides of vegenaise or vegan sour are available. for breakfast, a side of the seitan strips is a good choice, really good seitan.

good deli--vegan sloppy joes and vegan tempeh sammiches with mayonnaise and cheese are da bomb, baby (i think a crusty kid next to me recommended the sloppy joes as 'the dank'). when you're done gorging, the grocery is on the other side with their baked goods.

each time i've been there, they have had a vegan special on the board, and it has been great. last time, tamarind tofu was excellent:sweet and bit spicy. the food tastes fresh. good spring rolls too.

i recommend this place over the nearby Siam 21.

none of the entrees i've had here have been very filling, usually they skimp on ingredients, whether it's a sandwich or (especially) the tofu/sausage scramble. good ideas and menu items, just not that much to them.

Dragon City in Norfolk, Virginia

I've always had a soft spot for cheap, sludgy chinese food and fake meats. Dragon City is the only place in ORF that I know of doing this. It's more of an extra option there, rather than a focus, so it's not as good as other fake-meat chinese places I've been. Their normal tofu dishes are pretty good though.

They are real friendly, and very cheap ($6 can get you a large which can easily stretch into 1.5-2 meals). Also they deliver rather quickly.

like he said, they have vanilla + one other flavor each day. soy stuff is $3 for a big single scoop, but they have pints for sale at $4.xx and quarts for $6, which isn't more than the junk you'd get at the store.

I dig this place, their food is a lot less 'sludgy' than a lot of Chinese places; they don't go real heavy on the sauces, but enough to give flavor. The sesame/general tso/orange tofu dishes are all great. Cheap too, it's easy to make two dishes for $14 into 3+ meals, and I eat a lot...

What a great little spot. I went for breakfast twice in two days. First time, biscuit & gravy with tofu slice, and the second day, the tempeh/lettuce/tomato and black bean soup. Killer stuff. Simple food done well.

This is a chill little place, the folks are friendly and serve the grub quickly. They also have some organic and non-organic beers and plenty of deserts.

Tawon Thai in Seattle, Washington

I was really surprised how good this place was. We came here randomly after most of Ballard lost power. We had a party of 12 and they had no problem accommodating us (though it was only about 1/3 - 1/4 full at about 8:30pm Saturday).

Great food! I had the 'famous garlic' with tofu, which was great. Seared tofu, plenty of garlic, and fresh broccoli, all for $8, with the best brown rice I've had in a restaurant. I know there are hundreds of thai places in Seattle, but this one is worth checking out if you're nearby. Their menu is helpful in what can be made vegetarian, and all those items can have fried or soft tofu added.

Their spring rolls weren't so great, just inch-long small finger foods, so they're mostly just fried wrapper. Which isn't a huge turnoff, but they'd be better with more substance.

They also have a few local beers on draft, which of course are real tasty!

I had high hopes after checking out the menu, but none of the four things we ordered was particularly great. The fried rice with the mock chicken (which gets points for being mushroom-based instead of soy) was good, but there wasn't much chicken in there. The corn chowder was also tasty. But not much else worth mentioning.

I'd say, I would still go back and try more items, particularly if someone had recommendations. This place has potential.
