My friend brought me here when I first moved to the city and I am addicted to the vegan pizza by the slice. The crust is amazing, and they use excellent soy cheese. I always pick three ingredients and it's only $3.50. The one time I thought I wanted two slices I couldn't finish it all, a slice can be a meal. If you like garlic get the roasted garlic as a topping option, they are not skimpy and put whole cloves, roasted perfectly so the garlic is sweet.
It is mellow and quirky with evening happenings, movies on Tuesday, open mic on Wednesday and jazz on Thursday (no cover). I also like the way the store is split between the cafe and the market- with organic produce for sale, a very good bulk section and basic vegan products...not a full fledged grocer but a needed addition to the north side and much appreciated.
WOW! There is a vegan cheesecake that will blow your mind. A french trained culinary master who stopped in could not tell the difference between the traditional and dairy free version. Has a blueberry topping, the flavor is so tasty and the texture and mouth feel is just like traditional cheesecake. I have had other vegan cheesecakes and this surpasses them all!
The coffee bar also offers soy or rice milk and is open to possibly carrying almond, depending on customers. There are vegan pinwheels (chocolate swirled shortbread), cookies and muffins. I am not sure about the artisan chocolates, but since they are mostly dark it may be there are dairy free options.
the restaurant hosted me and my 9 friends very well, only one thing on the menu had egg in it, everything else is vegan...the tofu hush puppies were excellent, kind of like a meatball, i have never seen so many fake meat options, the fish sauce scared me but tasted great, so did the orange chicken, fabulous and friendly
i thought their standard cake donut was excellent, my friends are bringing a dozen back home to the midwest, the toppings icluded a butterscotch chocolate, banana and coconut, plus they are open late and have live shows, though these seem to be more for humor than quality sometimes, keep in mind you can get married here as well!
