When we lived in this neighborhood, we came here a few times. It reminds me of what the Blind Faith Cafe was probably like when it first opened--not pretentious at all and just a small storefront diner with a great bakery. The Tao bowls are generously portioned, healthy, tasty, and are variable with the change in vegetables. As someone who really likes spices, I think there could be some more interesting flavors in their main menu items and some more options for hot drinks, like plain, fair-trade/organic coffee, although they may have since added that (it's been a few months). Highly recommended for those of you living in or visiting the North of Howard "nugget" of Chicago.
My wife and I took her mom to Leona's in Rogers Park yesterday and had a great time with great food. And although we try not to eat cheese at home, we decided to throw caution to the wind, live a little, and have the vegan burger topped with cheddar and sauteed mushrooms (we laughed at the irony of this). Its important to note that you don't have to get cheese, soy or otherwise, on the burger if you don't want it. Everyone gets to choose two toppings, including a wide variety of vegetables, which, if I were vegan, I would gladly choose over any variety of soy cheese. We also had the portobella and provolone wrap. The portions were generous (we had two orders for three people), the service was prompt and courteous, and the food was very good. The burger was juicy and large and the wrap was full of flavor. The amount of vegetarian items on the menu allows us to look forward to supporting this neighborhood restaurant and Chicago institution soon!
If you are looking for vegan deserts, the Blind Faith Bakery supplied a vegan wedding cake and vegan guest cupcakes for our wedding. They were delicious! No one could believe it when we revealed their vegan-ness. I have always been a fan of the Blind Faith and am looking forward to being back in the area!
I had the opportunity to meet with the owner, Fran Horvath, on two separate occasions: once when I visited her store and once when she came to the vegetarian restaurant I was working at. She was nothing but helpful and friendly to me as I asked many questions about the store and its products. The store also has a partnership with Wild Tree Cafe which offers fresh produce in addition to the grocery and clothing items at Ethical Planet. Due to an inability to offer products in mass amounts, it is a little more expensive to shop here than a large corporate chain. However, I think it is worth a little extra to support local businesses that employ and profit local people, do not sell animal products of any kind, and offer a unique flavor to our neighborhoods.

We have always enjoyed ourselves at this place. The veggie duck is our favorite item by far--we have to fight over who gets to order it! Sometimes I'm a little wigged out by the videos that are playing all the time on the tiny TV, but if I am sitting in the other half of the restaurant, I can't see it. I think the dessert portions should be increased for the prices they are charging (the vegan cheesecake is delicious but tiny).
