I love Harry Singh's! It's affordable, fun, delicious veggie food (rotis are great) and attentive service. Downsides: be careful when selecting your "spiciness level." I picked one out of my range, and couldn't enjoy my meals with tears running down my cheeks. Also, it's a dry establishment, so I couldn't quench my thirst with a beer or chilled sauvignon blanc.
Stepping into Isles Bun and Bakery, one feels transported to Seattle at worst, Paris at best. The bakery bustles with customers and staff, the latter can be watched as they mix, roll and plop their famous rolls onto cookie sheets. The coffee is great and the vegan scones are good. It's a great place to fuel up before a jaunt to the Lake of the Isles dog park. Don't forget to grab Fido a treat!
As a vegan, neighborhood cafes can be tricky to navigate--Is there hidden dairy in the muffins?, what brand of soymilk?, I want lunch! What's here for me? Fortunately, South Minneapolis has May Day Cafe. Their vegan scones are extraordinary--the cherry-pecan and banana walnut are stand-outs and perfect in texture, size and heft. Match it up with a chai, tea or soy latte and you have a cheap, filing breakfast to go. They also have bean burritos for heartier appetites (or for lunch) served with mixed greens. The service is friendly, albeit a bit disorganized when the lines for service get long.
I finally made it over to Seward this Saturday after hearing about how awesomely vegan-friendly it was. I was blown away by how many choices I had, it was great! I settled on granola with soy milk and fruit and was delighted with the presentation. My soy latte was creamy, frothy and perfect, and the booth was cozy, quiet and intimate. A lovely way to start the weekend, you'll find me there again and again and again.
A zen-like atmosphere and delicious (affordable) food make this homestyle Japanese restaurant a favorite of mine. The mushroom udon is delectable--spongy noodles, yummy, salty broth and a variety of wild mushrooms. Check the kitchen--the owner is usually in the back cooking and watching to see that every dish sent out meets her high standards. Now that's quality control!
