Beans & Barley in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Beans and Barley consistently gets picked as Milwaukee's best restaurant for vegetarians by readers in just about every newspaper. Honestly, I don't know why. There's a few of other places in town that I think should take the title hands down. The menu is pretty vegetarian-heavy, but as a vegan, I don't even really notice those menu items that contain eggs and/or cheese. Don't get me wrong, the vegan items that they do offer are good; the TLT (tempeh, lettuce and tomato) and the black bean burrito are favorites. They are just not plentiful.
If you're looking for a quick snack, however, you can always count on the deli to have something for any type of vegetarian.

The atmosphere is nice - especially when the weather is good - but don't go here expecting anything substantial if you are vegan. Most of the soups are either meat or cream based. The only item on the regular menu is the hummus plate appetizer.
I have gone here more times than I can count, always hoping to be surprised that they have added vegan items to their menu.
No dice. I always end up feeling grumpy and leaving hungry.

The vegan baked goods sold here are always excellent and the service is always great. Along with sweets, they sell homemade frozen dinner item such as pot pies, burritos and sloppy joe pockets; all vegan. They are great to have on hand for a quick and easy meal.

It is a decent place to have brunch, although they only have one vegan offering on the menu - tofu scramble. With the variety they offer, it surprises me that they don't have more to offer as in the way of vegan fare. We always suggest it and they always apologize and say they are working on it...

The atmosphere in the cellar is great though. That's why we always go back.

Great soups with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Also, all their breads are vegan and clearly labeled as such. Highly recommended.
