Hunan Delight is "the good Chinese place" =)

The Plant in Brooklyn, New York City
Sep 30 06

rating star

The Plant is an excellent addition to the DUMBO area. There are a variety of creative raw-food dishes as well as great smoothies, juices, and items like organic raw granola. Feels a bit pricey, as raw food sometimes does, but worth it in my opinion, and awesome considering the other options in the area.

Sea in Brooklyn, New York City
Sep 28 06

rating star

Sea is one of the most atmospherically engaging veg-friendly restaurants that I have visited in New York City. There is a large fountain in the center with a statue of the Buddha. There are swing seats in the front that you can play on while you wait for your table. The place is large but often crowded on the weekends, when there is a DJ. The food is awesome and there are many vegetarian options, although my rating takes into account the overall feel of the place...which makes it stand out. It's a very cool place for dinner out...

Siggy's in Brooklyn, New York City

An excellent vegan-friendly organic restaurant in the Brooklyn Heights area. The Israeli staff is friendly and the food is varied and well-prepared. My favorite items were the Quinoa cakes and the Acorn Squash dish. Mmm! They also have a variety of smoothies / juices. The place is relatively small but nice. I worked in this area for a long time and am thankful to Siggy's for providing an organic vegetarian lunch option. Thank you Siggy's!!

V Spot in Brooklyn, New York City

rating star

The V-Spot is 100% Vegan, a great addition to the neighborhood. I enjoyed it... I had a salad, the fried 'chicken' empanandas, and a veggie burrito. The salad was mediocre, the empanandas were delish, and the veggie burrito was very good. The menu has a nice variety. The atmosphere is casual and cool, seems to be pretty popular. Not on the level of Caravan or Candle Cafe in Manhattan, but it's good...

'sNice is an excellent vegan-friendly cafe near 14th st...an oasis for veg-heads in this area. It rocks because it is an internet cafe (free access) and has a number of veg options. The food is not quite a 7, but overall the place is a 7. The salads are ok and there are some yum items like the tempeh reuben. There are daily specials, some of the best I had there were the braised cauliflower and the brussel sprouts. The variety of options is great, and there are some wonderful teas and desserts as well. The best thing about it is the large amount of seating (although it is often packed during peak hours) and the wi-fi.

Ayurveda Cafe in Manhattan, New York City

rating star

Ayurveda delivers on its claim -- a balanced dining experience. The environment is calming, with meditative decor. I always feel pleasant after a meal at Ayurveda. Even though you can ask for as much more food as you want (all-you-can-eat), I find that I am satisfied with the main thali (platter). I never leave feeling too stuffed, as I have often done with some Indian buffets.

The food is well-prepared and enjoyable. It is not the most amazing Indian food I have had. In Manhattan, places like Chennai Garden, Brick Lane Curry House, Vatan, or Pongal stand out for food quality. But Ayurveda is a unique experience, and the food is prepared with a care that you can taste.

I highly recommend Ayurveda.

Blossom in Manhattan, New York City

Blossom is an excellent upscale vegan restaurant with some creative and tasty dishes. I enjoyed the Black-Eyed Pea Cake, a fresh Arugula salad with avocado and chicpea, and a dish with tempeh, black beans, and squash. The food was very good and the atmosphere was upscale.

Brick Lane Curry House is amazing. The food is fresh and flavorful, well-prepared and delicious. Some of the best Inidian I have had in NYC.

Candle 79 in Manhattan, New York City

I visited Candle 79 with my family and had an absolutely delightful experience. The atmosphere was uplifting and the food was elegant. I had an incredible quinoa-crusted tempeh over maple sweet potato mash with caramelized onions, cranberry glaze, and haricots verts. My family and I shared a delicious salad. My mother had a hearty home made veggie burger and my step-father had cashew cream and vegetable ravioli. An absolutley first rate vegetarian dining experience!

Caravan of Dreams in Manhattan, New York City

Vegan cuisine done right! A M A Z I N G ... Creative, delicious, healthy vegan cuisine with an ample selection of live food dishes. Some of the best food I have eaten in New York City. If food like this were everywhere, I think a lot more people would be vegan. But a person of any dietary disposition will likely be delighted by the gastronomic miracles served up at Caravan of Dreams. The live music and organic sangria add further charm to the friendly atmosphere. Fabulous! =)

Chennai Garden in Manhattan, New York City

rating star

Chennai Garden is wonderful! The people have a positive attitude and it reflects in the quality of the food. Everything is fresh and flavorful, tastes like it's made with love. The lunch buffet is a great deal...very cheap for all-you-can-eat and such amazing food. The coconut chutney is phenomenal.

Chickpea in Manhattan, New York City
Nov 7 06

rating star

Chickpea is a great Middle Eastern spot in the village. The food is fresh-prepared and excellent. The falafel is high quality and the Chickplant -- a special pita creation involving eggplant, hummus, hard boiled egg, and hot sauce -- is amazing and totally unique for the area. The food is cheap and delicious, and they are open late on the weekends.

Counter in Manhattan, New York City

An excellent vegan restaurant and funky wine bar. The dishes are inspired and there is much attention to detail. It feels upscale but also casual. I had a phenomenal cauliflower dish and was also blown away by how delicious even the simple side dishes were, like sauteed vegetables or spiced quinoa. A great place for a nice evening with a close friend or a lover.

Delectica in Manhattan, New York City
Sep 22 06

rating star

Delectica is a great healthy/veg option in Midtown. The vegetarian platter was great...a choice of 3 of the prepared veg options (such as curried chickpeas, black beans/avocado, grilled veggies, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, etc) over a bed of greens. There were a few nice veg sandwich options, and a nice selection of veg-juices, smoothies, and desserts. I enjoyed my meal in the sun at one of the outdoor tables. :) Yum.

Eastanah in Manhattan, New York City

I dined at Eastanah and greatly enjoyed the food. I had not experienced Indonesian before. I had the Tempeh Java - strips of bean curd and tempeh coated in a sweet-and-spicy Java sauce and cooked until crispy - very tasty!

Galaxy Global Eatery in Manhattan, New York City

Galaxy Global Eatery is a cool veg-friendly joint in Union Square with an eye on the planet... the food is creative and yummy. I enjoyed the ceasar salad, the yucca fries, and the hempnut veggie burger.

Jubb's Longevity in Manhattan, New York City
Nov 17 06

rating star

Jubb's Longevity prepares excellent live food for take away. It is some of the most creative and delicious live food I have had in NYC. I would love it if they had places to sit and eat. The feeling at Jubb's is that the preparation of live food cuisine is an art...and it is. Be prepared to hang out for a while you wait for your food. Talk to the employees and you may learn quite a bit about health and nutrition. I highly recommend the quesadilla, the anut sandwich (tuna backwards), or any of the parfaits, and I do not recommend the falafel.

Mamoun's Falafel in Manhattan, New York City

Classic NYC falafel experience. A 10 for falafel, a 7 for NYC veg options.

Organic Harvest Cafe in Manhattan, New York City
Sep 22 06

rating star

The Organic Harvest Cafe is amazing, in my opinion the best veg-dining option in its area. The menu is incredibly diverse and creative, and the food is delicious. And it's all organic! The restaurant has a few meat items, but it is overwhelmingly vegan. There are also juices and smoothies. Some menu items include the Quinoa Conqueror Salad, Non-Dairy Eggplant Parm, Santa Fe Crepes, Tempeh Reuben, Seitan Enchiladas, Macro Platter, Indian Platter, Indonesian Wrap, Seaweed Salad, etc. Great desserts like the Carob Brownie or Blueberry Tofu Sour Cream Coffee Cake. Props to Owner Mark Mager!!

Pukk in Manhattan, New York City
Dec 29 06

rating star

I found Pukk to be a delightful experience. I went with a friend and we enjoyed the well-considered ambience of the place, with deep green lighting.

The food was incredible -- very fresh, flavorful, inspired and innovative. We had an amazing stuffed tofu appetizer. I don't eat tofu so often any more but this was to die for. High quality soft tofu slathered in a rich thai peanut sauce and stuffed with chopped asian veggies. Our mouths were watering peanut sauce... mmm... My friend had one of the mock dock dishes which he said was good but a bit salty. I had the masaman curry, which was savory and satisfying, with the twist of sweet potatoes in the curry. I also had a salad which was fresh and of good quality.

I highly recommend Pukk. When I first saw it I sort of overlooked it as another Thai joint in Manhattan. But Pukk is definitely raising the bar for quality vegetarian cuisine. I would most certainly go back for more.

Red Bamboo in Manhattan, New York City

delicious food, heavy on the mock-meats... the faux chicken parmesan rivals regular chicken parmesean. but after several years of eating vegan, i am questioning the effect of mock-meats and complex faux creations on my body and digestion. but... damn that's good!

ps - i would recommend Caravan of Dreams over Red Bamboo.

Souen in Manhattan, New York City
Dec 23 08

rating star

Souen is one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in NYC. The food is well-prepared, healthy macrobiotic cuisine. Some of the dishes are mildly flavored, but you can taste that this is good food, and that is has been prepared with care. The environment is peaceful and calming, with lots of plants inside. I recommend the faux chicken parmesean... but most everything I have had there is satisfying, especially if you want to leave feeling healthy. :)

Spring Street Natural in Manhattan, New York City

The vegetarian options are plentiful, the food is delicious, and there is outdoor seating for warm weather.

Vatan in Manhattan, New York City
Dec 29 06

rating star

The best Indian food experience I have had in NYC. If you go, eat very light prior to dinner. The cuisine is elegantly prepared, unique and delicious. The atmosphere is fun and upscale. I recommend asking them to put half of your meal in a doggie bag so you can take it home and enjoy it later. They serve so much food that half of it is more than enough for one meal. SO AMAZING

Yaffa Cafe in Manhattan, New York City
Sep 22 06

rating star

Yaffa Cafe deserves recognition because it is open all night, has a large selection of veg options, and has a great outdoor patio. The food is reliable but not incredible. Still it is good and the variety makes it worth taking note of, especially in the warm weather.

New Bodai in Queens, New York City

I enjoyed my meal, vegetarian General Tso's Chicken with Broccoli. But the people seemed to have an attitudie. Odd, for a Buddhist vegan restuarant. :)

Singh's Roti Shop & Bar in Queens, New York City
Sep 28 06

rating star

The food was excellent...rich and satisfying pureed spinach, spiced eggplant, curried chickpeas, and soft roti. The atmosphere was loud and the service was kind of mean. But the trip there was worth it for the food.
