vegan-friendly restaurant and bar
Honeypie is owned by the same people that own Fuel Cafe, Comet Cafe, Balzac, Palomino, Hi Hat Garage, so you can expect a similar menu and atmosphere. The main difference is that Honeypie is entirely smoke-free (huge difference from Palomino). The menu doesn't seem to have as many vegan options as some of the other places, but still has a decent amount, including: curry tofu sandwich, vegan pastrami sandwich (made with Field Roast faux meat), and a few other sandwiches and salads. They also serve breakfast every day which includes vegan options.
Honeypie has a full service bar and a decent-sized dining area, including wooden booths. An odd choice in decor, considering the fact they claim to cater to vegans and vegetarians would be the large deer head and stuffed ducks you find mounted on the walls.

The 2 times I've been here the service was just mediocre, but the food was pretty good. I had the curry tofu sandwich which for some reason I wasn't expecting to like that much, but really loved it. I also tried to U-boat made vegan, which was a little greasy, but still yummy. The chocolate mint cake was really good and I could have definitely eaten more!
Since they serve vegan food I found it insulting to put dead animals on the wall... maybe they are trying to be funny? I actually think the idea of the restaurant is to try to get vegans to be less vegan... (I'll explain) Attempting to desensitize vegans by having them eat around dead/stuffed and mounted animals and make them order the chicken salad sandwich (vegan style) or the pork shank sandwich (vegan style) instead of saying the seitan or tofu sandwich. I felt like the restaurant is set up as a mockery of being vegan. The food was good though and the staff was friendly, just not a lot of variety... after all there are more vegan soups then just vegetable and thats the one they serve. Perfect example of how it's hard to "successfully" cater to meat eaters and vegans in the same restaurant.
Although the breakfast was better then the lunch you've got about 5 menu items to choose from if your vegan, the soy lattes are delish and served in pint glasses plus they use Anodyne Coffee which is the best coffee ever!

I have to agree that I was a bit dismayed by the animal heads on the wall, but at the same time, I can't say that it's the only Wisconsin bar/restaurant w/ trophy heads on the wall, so as disgusting as it sounds, it didn't shock me. What I did love about the place is that it's smoke-free.
Given that the people that own this place also own a lot of other vegan-friendly joints (Palomino, Comet, etc.), I would have expected more vegan options. Someone on their staff told me they have more vegan options at brunch so I checked that out and the only real brunch items were tofu scramble or a burrito w/ tofu scramble and veggie sausage. Not bad, but not much variety. They also offered some BBQ pulled pork sandwich veganized and a composter sandwich which was tofu cream cheese and veggies, but neither are brunch items.
I got the tofu scramble burrito which came w/ veggie sausage, tofu sour cream, and salsa. It was good but nothing spectacular. It would have benefitted from some veggies or at least some hot sauce. The fried potatoes it came with, however, were very good. I tried my friend's composter sandwich, which was good, but not very filling, since it was mostly sprouts, tomato, and cucumber. It came on some really good rye bread though, and the fries it came with were great.
Service was friendly but really slow. Granted, it was full on a Saturday morning, but 45 minutes for two items still seems like a long time.
