I found the service here to be super-friendly and attentive. They give you free, subtle, tasty herbal tea which I got addicted to. The menu features unusual dishes (vegetarian kidney anyone?), which I have to try later. For this first visit, I tried their black bean "chicken." It was a decent, straight-forward stir fry with plenty of vegetables. However, what they gave me was actually mock duck from a can, which was okay, but hardly spectacular, given the array of mockmeats you can find in San Francisco. On a whole, there wasn't any special here, but it seemed pleasant and comforting and I look forward to trying their more unusual fare next time.

The place smelled when I walked in. There were pieces of food on my menu, and there was a green floater about the size of a dime in my cup of water. The service was rude, the food was edible at best and was presented about like food at a homeless soup kitchen. Just plain gross - I was really disappointed. I couldn't believe this place had any good reviews...the last one was a long time ago, maybe things have changed. Yuck.

Shangri-La is the best vegetarian (Buddhist) Chinese restaurant I have ever been to: cheap, tasty, inventive, and authentic (they are associated with a local Buddhist monastery -- monks often are in the restaurant at lunch time).

They used to have only a few "fake meat" items, but caved a few years ago. I prefer the original menu items. Try the cold tofu and hot cucumber appetizers. The hot-and-sour soup can't be beat. My favorite main dishes are hot-sauce broccoli, hot-sauce eggplant, and vegetables with gluten. Sweet-and-sour walnuts are a fabulous addition if you are getting a mix of items. If you are visiting SF, this is a "must try" restaurant.

Good and inexpensive. I paid about 7 dollars for curry and a side of rice. The curry wasn't THAT amazing but it was good, and they give you a lot. It didn't come with rice which was stupid. My friend got tofu balls with broccoli which was AMAZING though. I thought it was overall pretty good
