Leona's is very deceptive. They pretend to be vegan-friendly when actually they are only vegetarian-friendly. After eating there for years, a good server finally told me that the bun served with the Vegan Burger is not vegan. They also do not offer another option, such as bread or a wrap. I ate mine without the bun, just as a patty, and without the bun to contain it it just crumbles apart. I've been told that the soy cheese is not vegan. The pasta is vegan but the marinara sauce is not. I think I wanted to order some sort of veggie wrap awhile back but was told that the sauce is not vegan. I'm very disappointed. I used to count on Leona's as an easy place to eat when going out with non-veggie friends, but it looks like I won't be going there anymore. You can't trust the menu or the servers.

I'm fairly annoyed with Leona's for telling me twice that their soy cheese was now casein-free and then telling me the last time that I went that there is casein in it. At the same time, they make a fantastic grilled veggie wrap that is vegan.

I think that the other reviewers are being a little harsh. Yes, it's bad that Leona's doesn't seem to know what the verdict on their soy cheese is, but at least they're trying to have soy cheese and at least they have a few vegan options that are clearly labeled on their menus as vegan (notice that the menu doesn't say ANYWHERE that they have soy cheese). They're still pretty far ahead most Italian restaurants in Chicago.

My wife and I took her mom to Leona's in Rogers Park yesterday and had a great time with great food. And although we try not to eat cheese at home, we decided to throw caution to the wind, live a little, and have the vegan burger topped with cheddar and sauteed mushrooms (we laughed at the irony of this). Its important to note that you don't have to get cheese, soy or otherwise, on the burger if you don't want it. Everyone gets to choose two toppings, including a wide variety of vegetables, which, if I were vegan, I would gladly choose over any variety of soy cheese. We also had the portobella and provolone wrap. The portions were generous (we had two orders for three people), the service was prompt and courteous, and the food was very good. The burger was juicy and large and the wrap was full of flavor. The amount of vegetarian items on the menu allows us to look forward to supporting this neighborhood restaurant and Chicago institution soon!

Leona's is NOT VEGAN. They advertise that their soy cheese is casein free, but there is cheese in every single one of their sauces. I have heard this from three separate servers at two different locations. I had to order a pizza with olive-oil instead of sauce. Can anyone tell me why they would offer vegan cheese but not vegan sauce?

I think Leona's should get some props from trying... they're one of the first places in the city to go all-organic, and there are plenty of vegan options, considering what kind of restaurant it is. As for the vegan burger, you have to ask for it well-done or else it's mushy (but, then again, so are most vegan burgers). It's excellent with some mushrooms and avocado slices on top. I also like the portabella mushroom skewers, and the tofu skewers ain't bad, either.

Who cares whether the soy cheese is vegan? The soy cheese is vile, and is to be avoided at all costs. Once you do that, the food is very nice.

I called Leona's today. They told me the Soy Cheese in the "Vegan" Pizza has "some lactose". Not vegan. I wonder about the "Vegan Burger".

In general the food isn't very good.

Leona's has lied to me about food items being vegan on more than one occassion. They assured me that a pizza made with their soy cheese and regular pizza sauce is vegan. However, I ordered it and there was obviously cheese in the sauce. The restaurant manager argued with me, saying that it was garlic. I KNEW it wasn't. He went back and checked their official ingredient book to prove me wrong, but turns out I was right. More than one vegan I know was given the same information. Their vegan burger, which I'd even question the true "vegan"-ness of, is gross. I would never eat here again.

Leona's stands out because it is one of few places where my non-veg father and I can both be happy. The food is always huge, more than filling. There are lots of vegan options. It's not gourmet, but it's fun, friendly, and one of the best options in some parts of the suburbs. I like the big fat vegan burger (avocado and roasted garlic for me!), the hummus pizza-esque appetizer is good (although it's so similar to the actual hummus vegan pizza that I've never ordered the pizza). The psychedelic salad is huge and offers lots of options for individual tastes. The veggie sides are good, particularly the lemon broccoli.

It's not the kind of place that's worth making a special trip for during a vacation to Chicago, but it is the perfect place to take a mixed crowd when you want to hang out and catch up.

I was all excited by the number of vegan items on their menu, but my food turned out to be pretty gross. The vegan burger is mushy and bland, and the waitstaff is not all that knowledgeable. My boyfriend also tells me that non-vegan food is terrible, so I wouldn't even suggest it as a place to take omnivorous friends.

I'm not sure I actually believe that their soy cheese is vegan. This has been the subject of much debate, of course.

The vegan burger is pretty decent, though, and I give them some points for trying, I suppose.

Soy cheese pizza (you can put tofu on it), vegan burger, tofu, roasted veggies & Soy cheese wrap, and vegetarian nirvana - skewers with veggies and tofu

They have 18 locations in Chicago

They also deliver.

The portions are huge. This is the type of place that your average american family would LOVE. Personally, I like Leona's. I eat there a lot with my friends who hate vegetarian and ethnic foods. I know this is Italian but it is very American Italian. The service is always fast!!!
