Vege Thai is an unassuming restaurant on Hawthorne that serves 100% vegetarian, and mostly vegan Thai food.

A few of the dishes have eggs and some of the mock meats are not vegan. This changes so always ask! Almost every dish can be made vegan.

This place was a little hard for me to find, but worth it once I found it. The mock meats are great, but make sure to check if they are vegan, sometimes it changes.

I ate there tonight with my family, and we had a very good experience. The service was great; very attentive and nice. We started off with the sampler appetizer which comes with mock chicken nuggets, spring rolls, fried tofu, tofu kabob and wonton. The server was nice enough to cut the spring rolls in half, so everyone at the table could have a piece. Everything was excellent. Very yummy! I'd highly recommend getting this sampler. We also had an entree -- veggie beef with broccoli -- which was pretty good, though definitely not amazing. The desserts though were amazing! We had the fried bananas and we also had the sticky rice with roasted coconut. Both were excellent! Yumm! I'm salivating just thinking about them.
We also ordered a Thai salad and let the server know we wanted it mild. When it came we were surprised by hot it was; my mom likes spicy food and even she couldn't eat it. The peanuts on it were also stale. We told the server we couldn't eat it and took it off our bill, which was nice.
Except for the mango salad incident, we had a very good experience.

This is my daughter's favorite restaurant in Portland.

Decent, but not great, curry.

Tremendously friendly staff open to special orders.

I'm not impressed. The food was bland, even tasteless. It left me with indigestion.

Was on vacation in Portland, saw the sign, stopped in. This is absolutely the best Thai food I have ever had...vegetarian or otherwise. I am from LA and have been to many, many Thai food restaurants...this is the best.

My husband and I tried Vege Thai last night and absolutely loved it. I recommend that you start out with the sampler appetizer which comes with mock chicken nuggets, spring rolls, fried tofu, tofu kabob and wonton. It was awesome. Spring rolls are to die for. My husband had the green curry. It had such a great taste to it, I couldn't stop sampling it. I had the cashew nut mock chicken and really enjoyed it as well. Both meals were cooked perfectly. I would recommend this place to anyone. The restaurant is kind of small. Great place for lunch or a weeknight dinner out. Bring your appetite because portions are big. We brought half the stuff home.

Vege Thai used to be a place we'd go on an extremely regular basis. They're always friendly, the food is typically great and everything is veg.

Unfortunately we had an awful incident where BOTH our kids got violently ill after eating the soy mock chicken nuggets. We're talking 2 kids throwing up all night long.

Needless to say it's been very difficult to justify going back :(

I went here with a large group of ten and they gracefully accomodated us, despite the fact that we had no reservation. The service was good, and the food was all tasty, but nothing blew me away. In general, the food erred toward the sweet side, and I would've liked more emphasis on savory flavors.

Also, all dishes come with brown rice, though jasmine rice can be had for extra. I don't really like brown rice, and it's nutty flavor is intrusive in Thai food, especially the curries. They should offer a choice of jasmine or brown for no charge.
