I have been going to Golden Empress for years.
When my friends and I refer to "getting Chinese food to eat" it is completely understood that we actually mean we want to go to Golden Empress.
I feel that this place has the best tasting, most consistently delicious veg Chinese dishes in the entire city. Despite the fact that Golden Empress also serves meat dishes, your food tastes very veg-friendly and will NOT come out tasting like it was cooked in a pan that just cooked some flesh.
Also the main server, Sam, is extremely friendly.
I'd like to note that this restaurant is not anywhere near Chinatown. It is south of South St on the west side of 5th street.
I've only ordered from them once and have never eaten in their restaurant, but the one time I *did* order, I received my vegetarian spring rolls, but one had shrimp in it. Also, the orange beef I got was wicked chewy and just weird.
I'm willing to chalk up the shrimp roll to one of those things that just happens, but with other options nearby, I'm reluctant to order from them any time soon.
