Taste of India is the most authentic Indian food place in Reno. Their one and only cook is actually from India. I have travelled extensively in the Indian subcontinent, and the presentation of the lunch buffet food, the portions, and the tastes are the real Indian subcontinent thing. The pickles, the dal and rice, and the spinach dishes are quite spicy, and I often have to wash my eyes out and blow my nose after eating there. The samosas are absolutely delicious. In India, they do lavish the food with spices. After only two lunch buffet plates - one is full. For 8$US, you will definitely get your money's worth in northern style Indian dining. The food is northern style Indian eating, like a Thali plate. Most of their daily lunch buffet portions are vegetarian (not vegan). They use ghee butter in all of their dishes.

Again if you want the authentic and delicious Indian vegetarian cuisine, then go here and avoid the other Indian places in Reno. First, The women hostess, although not around these days, is quite nice and friendly. The background music is classical sitar playing and the paintings are of Mughal dynasty prints. It is simple and nice. They don't blast at high volume the garbage Indian MTV non-stop television, which distracts the eater, nor do they stare at the patrons while they eat. The other Indian places in Reno tend to do these things, which are quite disarming and annoying for the American dining patron.

However, I have some critiques for the economic future of the place. Go to the Lunch buffets. Do not go to the dinners. The dinners have a lot less food and much higher prices. Recently, I went during a weekend lunch buffet. My friend and myself were the only ones eating! There are usually lots of diners during the weeknend lunch buffets. I have a feeling that this is due to their only waiter, a long and lanky gentleman who seems nice, yet gives off a weird vibe. This is difficult to explain, but it might just be a cultural adjustment thing. This one waiter is always there: lunch buffet and dinner - seven days a week!

Finally, and this is a public health thing. The last time I was there for the lunch buffet, there was long black hair (also probably from the Indian subcontinent) in my soup. By the way, in India these things also commonly take place in restaurants. The reason for this problem is that they don't have glass covers for all of their buffet portions as they should do. The pickle, soup and salad bar is not covered, and nor are the rice, dal and vegetable curry portions. This is serious. Someone could get something nasty from a sick patron coughing or accidently spitting from talking around the food - not to mention hairs. But like I stated before, this is real authentic Indian subcontinent dining - and right here in Reno.

Small, casual Indian restaurant with very friendly staff. Delicious lunch buffet with plenty of vegetarian options, and you can get it to go. Staples of the buffet include naan, dal makhani, basmati rice, lentil soup, gulab jamun, and an array of chutneys and salad items. In addition, there are 5-6 dishes that change daily, 2 of which are vegetarian.

Service is good (and friendly), although paying your check at the counter can seem a little chaotic. I pay with Visa, so I know they accept that. There is some themed decor, and unobtrusive Indian music playing, but this is definitely the least formal Indian place in Reno. I believe it's also the least expensive.

The food isn't fancy, but - aside from infrequent minor problems such as slightly-too-hard potatoes or underseasoning - it is very, very delicious, and it's a great deal.
