Sick of Taco Bell? Check out this cleaner, slightly more expensive alternative if you're fiending for a nice burrito or tacos...

Chipotle restaurants have been sprouting up across the Twin Cities everywhere you turn. Run like a Subway, you get to choose which toppings go on your burrito and which stay off. A delicious vegetarian burrito/fajita is offered that can include roasted green peppers, black beans, rice, a choice of various salsas, guacomole, and shredded lettuce (for non-vegans there is also sour cream and shredded cheese). One of these monsters is enough to fill anyone's appetite and they come down to a mere $5. Beer and fountain drinks are available, along with nachos and other appetizer type dishes.

I've gotten food from this location a couple of times and it's always been fast and friendly. The food is good, it's cheap, there's a lot of it. There are some who will argue that Chipotle isn't fast food, but I still consider it such - and I'm a bit embarressed to say I like it a lot.

Get your vegetarian burrito with guacamole, skip the dairy, and then drench it with green Tabasco. It's some of the best Mexican out there, if not particularly authentic. Chipotle is quick (at off-peak times) and is a pretty good value as well.

As I understand it, McDonald's has a minority share in Chipotle, but does not own it.

i don't think i've ever heard anyone mention how great chipotle is without commenting about the quantity of food you get -- like, "the burritos are as big as your head!". i think even some of chipotle's earlier ads touted this as a main selling point. but the funny thing is, the issue of whether or not an item of food is as big as my head is very rarely a factor in my decision about where to eat..

..so focusing on the food itself, i can't say i've ever found it to be that bad, really. the ingredients seem fresh enough, and of a decent quality.. but there is still an inescapable mass-produced dullness to it all -- in addition to the assembly line construction of the burrito, everything inside seems bland.. call it filler food.

so, taking additionally into account the usual long lines, i almost never end up eating there. the fact that mcdonald's corporation has a large stake in chipotle, and that they multiply starbucks-style across the urban landscape, certainly doesn't earn it any extra smiley face stickers, either. chipotle restaurants just sort of take up space that could otherwise be filled with something much more interesting -- you know, sort of like one of their burritos in your stomach..

I hate to burst the bubble for any die hard Chipotle Fans out there, but I had spoken to someone in Chipotle who found out from there Cheese manufacturer that the cheeses used in Chipotle contain animal rennet. Burritos are still delicious without the cheese!
