Went on two different evenings, one when the place was almost empty, and the next night when it was crowded. Both nights I was seated quickly and had a very attentive wait-staff. I got the vegan stir fry both times, once with seitan and once with tofu. The tofu was recommended by my very knowledgeable waitress but I have to say that I thought the seitan had more body and was tastier.

The vegan selections were pretty limited on the menu unfortunately but what vegan items they did have looked satisfying. The only vegan dessert was a chocolate macaroon cookie. I reluctantly ordered it thinking I'd get a couple of lonely looking cookies on a plate and instead got a double layer cookie about the size of an eggo waffle! It was light and delicious.

I will recommend Heartland Cafe to my veggie friends or the veggie curious.

Heartland Cafe is a funky fixture in the Rogers Park community. It has been a center for progressive politics and tasty food for decades. The menu is vegan-friendly, with quite a few options and helpful notes on the menu (such as pointing out which breads/buns are vegan). Also, the wait staff is knowledgable as to what food is vegan. The black bean burgers and bbq seitan are good standards and they offer a tofu scramble on the breakfast side.

This place is pretty nice and pretty vegan-friendly. I got the black bean burger with sweet potato fries, which was filling and pretty tasty. The berry pie is good, but they came out cold--my friend partner ordered his warm, which was way better. And the service is a bit slow when it's busy.

The food here is pretty good (the pies for dessert are both vegan and tasty!), and you can't beat the laid back atmosphere. I think it's both a good place for a date or for a group gathering. My only qualm is that when it got moderately busy, I felt really neglected by the servers.

I've only eaten breakfast here, but I must say I love being able to order veggie sausage patties, veggie sausage gravy and huge fruit filled pancakes. A bit on the expensive side, but so worth it.
