This place's vibe wasn't as bad as I had feared. The staff was really nice but the other patrons were... stiff. The food was great and I liked the atmosphere.

I live in Massachusetts but visit the Red & Black whenever I'm in Portland. Great food! Love the TLT sandwich. Hope to be back soon.... Keep up the great work you guys! YUM!

I visited Red and Black during a recent visit to portland and ended up coming back everyday for the rest of my stay. Both the food and the atmosphere are excellent. Every thing I tried was delicious and fresh and was very good value. This place really puts to shame some other vegan restaurants who seem to think they can charge what they like, serve mediocre food and expect people to come back because they are vegan. I will definitely be coming back here on my next visit to portland. The coffee is excellent too!

I love the Red and Black. Not just because the people are nice. Not just because the food is yummy. Not just because the coffee is lovely. Not just because they hold lots of cool events there. I love the Red and Black because they are radical--and they offer a nice, safe space for other radicals to gather. We held some of our May Day committee organizing meetings there this year, and I know we will do so again in the future :) YAY RED AND BLACK!!!

So many delicious vegan dishes to choose from, my non-vegan friends even like it! I love the laid back environment and super friendly staff. Great food, great people, great beer!

I decided to give the restaurant a try after I stopped at Food Fight. The woman at the counter didn't know the ingredients in any of the menu items. She did not have enough people skills to be communicating with customers. At that point I should have left. It took over 30 minutes for them to bring out my salad and there were a total of 5 customers in the restaurant (and I saw at least 2 people behind the counter). The salad looked as though it had been sitting out for hours.

The food was very good. I got a ruben sandwich; the temped was cut into small pieces and marinated (very yummy!) and it came with a cheesy sauce which was also very good. My partner got a hummus sandwich which was great too; much better than your average hummus sandwich. Our friend got the quinoa and kale bowl and she was very happy with it.
The atmosphere was casual and cool, and the bulletin boards were covered with animal friendly and vegan stuff. Being 1 min. away from the Vegan Mini-Mall is also an advantage. :-)

my favorite restaurant in portland, by far! they have the best reuben and also tempeh-lettuce-tomato with bacon-style tempeh. i have only had the sandwiches, maybe three times, and they are winners. ranks up there with a personal fav, minneapolis's hard times cafe, which is very similar in food and operation

I like working here because there's no boss and it's a hub for the radical community in Portland. I like it even more lately because our friend Olaf planted a beautiful garden outside and we now have beer on tap! And we're now 100% vegan!!! Please come hang out at my work and be part of something cool. Please also don't forget to buy stuff so that we can keep stacking mad scrilla. BTW most of the people who work here are vegan so by spending your money here you'll be helping keep more ca$h in the vegan economy and away from animal abusers.

Nice little coffee shop. My husband and I got some sandwiches, which weren't all that great but weren't bad either. The coffee was very good, though, and they have free wi-fi internet access. (And three computers that you can use to surf the net too.)
