Vegan, worker-owned cafe with cornmeal waffles, sandwiches, dragon noodles. and more

Portland's only 100% vegan, worker-owned and collectively managed restaurant and small venue. The colors 'Red & Black' signify that this is also an explicitly anarchist establishment.

The Red & Black's food menu includes sandwiches, salads, soup, chili, bagels and sweets. Most things are made from scratch with local and organic ingredients. If you can get there early (before noon) you can order their famous cornmeal waffles. The drink menu includes standard espresso drinks, housemade chai, beer (on tap and in bottles), juice and also kombucha on tap.

The Red & Black also has free wifi and 2 free internet terminals provided by Free Geek. Last but not least the R & B frequently hosts live music, radical films, book readings, craft nights etc.

The Red & Black is located on the other side of the block from the Vegan Mini-Mall.

Note: This cafe is cash-only. There is an ATM on-site that charges $2 for withdrawals.

Go Support This Place, Excellent Space. Best Points When We Went Up To Portland Were The Springsteen Poster- "The Only Boss We Listen To" The TLT Sandwich, and Chili.

The food was very good. I got a ruben sandwich; the temped was cut into small pieces and marinated (very yummy!) and it came with a cheesy sauce which was also very good. My partner got a hummus sandwich which was great too; much better than your average hummus sandwich. Our friend got the quinoa and kale bowl and she was very happy with it.
The atmosphere was casual and cool, and the bulletin boards were covered with animal friendly and vegan stuff. Being 1 min. away from the Vegan Mini-Mall is also an advantage. :-)

my favorite restaurant in portland, by far! they have the best reuben and also tempeh-lettuce-tomato with bacon-style tempeh. i have only had the sandwiches, maybe three times, and they are winners. ranks up there with a personal fav, minneapolis's hard times cafe, which is very similar in food and operation

I like working here because there's no boss and it's a hub for the radical community in Portland. I like it even more lately because our friend Olaf planted a beautiful garden outside and we now have beer on tap! And we're now 100% vegan!!! Please come hang out at my work and be part of something cool. Please also don't forget to buy stuff so that we can keep stacking mad scrilla. BTW most of the people who work here are vegan so by spending your money here you'll be helping keep more ca$h in the vegan economy and away from animal abusers.

Nice little coffee shop. My husband and I got some sandwiches, which weren't all that great but weren't bad either. The coffee was very good, though, and they have free wi-fi internet access. (And three computers that you can use to surf the net too.)
