Vegan & Vegetarian Friendly Bar Food

Grumpy's Bar and Grill recently opened a location in Roseville. The menu appears to be the same as the downtown Minneapolis one. They have 3 kinds of veggie burgers, mock chicken patties available for substitution on any sandwich, and a BBQ mock duck sandwich.

The Grumpy's on Washington Av in Mpls is one of my favorite places to take omnis--something for everyone, and who doesn't like tots? The wait staff is fantastic; they recognize the hus and I and are great to us. I heard (might be wrong) that this bar started out by some metal band member, and the aesthetic definitely fits.

The Roseville location is no downtown Grumpy's, that's for sure. Metal meets the suburbs. It's like the twilight zone. For starters, this location adds some weird spiced mayo to its otherwise fantastic bbq mock duck sandwich--the downtown location does not. So be sure to ask them to hold the mayo.

Also, this location doesn't seem to know how to cook the mock duck, so you have a good chance of getting overly dry filling (maybe why they added the mayo??? So strange.)

My impression is that Grumpy's just sold the brand and slapped it on a sportsbar that went under. I don't even think staff from the other Grumpy's locations even work at this one. There are a lot of inconsistencies between the locations.

If you're vegetarian and love the mac and cheese bites, be sure to ask for the spiced sour cream that every other location serves with them--here, they're not served with anything, and they're served in some weird artsy wire basket.

I had a pretty awful experience at this location. My husband and I were two of 8-10 customers total. We sat at the empty bar since our objective was to drink beers.

We inquired about the vegan options, and the bartender informed us that the ONLY vegan item on the menu (other than fries, etc.) is the bbq mock duck sandwich. Ok. Then he came back after talking to the cooks and found that they did have the vegan Boca patties for burgers. Awesome. Ordered one burger (bread wasn't vegan? they were unclear and so we got some other bread) and one bbq mock duck sandwich.

The service was really bad. The bartender spent more time flirting with the waitresses than paying any attention to us. Not that I need a constant flow of beer, but I literally had to shout and wave my hands after waiting for several minutes just to get his attention to refill my water, let alone a beer.

The food arrived, and my mock duck sandwich was slathered with mayonnaise. Mayo was no where in the description on the menu and the bartender was certain that it was all vegan. I sent it back, got a mayo-free sandwich. My husband's Boca burger was ok. The fries and tater tots were great.

I continued to have empty beer and water glasses while the bartender was on his cell phone. I just felt like I was at a hipster version of Applebee's and that I was the jerk for trying to order vegan food. We complained to the manager and wound up getting comped for some of the food, but I never plan on returning to this location.
