The Earth Cafe Deli is a historic community hub to the city of Norman, Oklahoma. As a campus community, the Earth has supported Norman's alternative lifestyles for years offering good organic food.

A recent expansion from their smaller grocery store that remains on Flood Ave, The Deli and Cafe offers breakfast plates until 10:30 a.m., and 3:00 p.m. Sundays. The menu includes items like Tempeh Tacos, Fool Your Mom Chicken Salad Sandwich, Messy Mary (Sloppy Joe's animal loving cousin), Tofu Scramble, Vegan Biscuits and Soysage Gravy, and much much more.

The espresso and juice bars are also very impressive. They offer organic milk, soy milk, vanilla soy milk, and fresh vegetable juices of any combination. The smoothies are also popular, made with either soy milk or apple juice.

I went to the Earth Cafe and was really looking forward to the tofu scramble with biscuits and gravy but those were not available after 11am. Instead, we ordered two "Benevolent Earth" salads - one with the Farmer's Cheese and the other with a free exchange of avocado for the Farmer's Cheese. The salads came jam packed with pumpkin seeds, black olives, tomatoes and sprouts. The sesame ginger vinaigrette is not as good as other commercial dressings such as Annie's but complemented the salad. The vegan ranch was much admired by all. In addition to the salads, we ordered 2 smoothies - one with blueberries, mango, and banana and the other with banana, cocoa and pb. The first was described as "really good and banana-y." The second was great and not too sweet.

A fairly new addition to the University of Oklahoma’s campus corner dining scene is The Earth Café & Deli, located on the North end of Asp Ave in Norman. This grassroots restaurant has absolutely flourished since moving closer to the college campus. The Earth carries with its name a certain bond to the city of Norman. The regulars are fully devoted to keeping Norman, and the Earth, as peaceful and sustainable as possible.

The Earth Natural Foods grocery store remains at the Deli’s former location on Flood Ave, where the food came from a kitchen with less space than a large bathroom. The cooks managed to impress their customers with such minimal resources on Flood, but the new place proves the possibilities for health food is endless.

The menu covers breakfast, lunch, soymilk or apple juice based smoothies, fresh juices, and organic espresso. Just about everything the Earth uses is organic, and naturally they are extremely vegan friendly. The lunch menu features a variety of both vegan and vegetarian soups. The Veggie Chili is regularly available, and other soups are rotated in. Some favorite include the “Tempeh Tacos,” “Uber Burger,” “Fool Your Mom Chicken Salad Sandwich,” and much more. Every cheesy item is made with organic cheese, and can be modified with vegan cheese. The espressos have similar options with milk and soymilk.

The ambiance is simple, yet satisfying. Lotus flowers create an earthy undertone and the employees choose the music, so customers never know what will be playing. There are always enough locals to make a visitor feel somewhat at home, and the service, though not the fastest in the industry, is friendly and accommodating. They have very reasonable hours, operating seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Eating at the Earth feels like eating at a friend’s house. Dedicated to delicious food, the Earth should be a top choice for both the vegan and the nonvegan alike. Anyone who enjoys the taste of fresh, organic food will love the tasty delights at the earth. Oh, they also employ the only commercial vegan baker in town.
