Vegan-friendly Ethiopian food

Ethiopian Cottage offers an authentic Ethiopian dining experience by encouraging diners to eat out of the Moseb basket-table and use their hands instead of forks. However, they offer normal tables and chairs for the less adventurous, as well as knives, forks and individual plates.

The restaurant is decorated with colorful curtains, they play lively music, and the menu begins by defining all the terms on the menu, which helps add to the dining experience. The menu also gives basic instructions for use of your Injera (Ethiopian flat bread that is used to pick up food).

Dishes are based in three forms, Fitfit salads, which combine vegetables with seasoned Injera, Wat, which is a spiced stew, and Tibs which is a sautéed blend of vegetables with onions and spices.

I really enjoyed the food here and am happy to see the return of an Ethiopian restaurant to Milwaukee. My friend and I shared the vegetarian platter, which included: yellow split peas, red lentils, greens, and a cabbage/carrot mixture. The flavor was really good and the service was friendly.

I am not sure if their tea is entirely homemade or if they spice up a bag of tea, but either way, it has a good flavor and is a definite improvement over the bag of Lipton I've been served elsewhere (like Meskerem in D.C.)

I have been here twice now, and wow, very delicious. The service was very good and they were quite accommodating to our requests. I brought my family with and they all seemed to enjoy it, not only because of the great food, but also because of the fun of eating the bread with your hands and enjoying a more unique dining experience than at most Milwaukee restaurants. The food was also moderately priced for how much food you receive. I will definitely be going back!!!
