Maoz Vegetarian is an all-vegetarian (and nearly all vegan) falafel shop that features falafel sandwiches, salads, and fries. After you get your sandwich, there's a large selection of self-serve toppings - pickles, cucumber salad, roasted cauliflower, dairy and vegan coleslaws, carrots, baby eggplants dyed in beet juice (really), olives, several fresh hot sauces, and much more. The trick is they don't leave very much spare room in your sandwich, so you can't really load up on the condiments.
The first Maoz branch was opened in 1991 in Amsterdam, Holland in order to introduce Dutch people to a new and nutritious vegetarian dish (falafel sandwiches). The Maoz sandwich became a huge success in Amsterdam, leading to the expansion of Maoz both nationally and internationally.
Between 16th and 17th Streets. Take L,N,R,Q,W,4,5,6 to 14th Street-Union Square.

DELICIOUS!!!! I had the "mini" falafel, which was a regular sized pita with 2 falafel in it and I stuffed it beyond belief with pickled carrots, tomato salad, tabbouleh, and roasted cauliflower and broccoli. The roasted cauliflower and broccoli were absolutely amazing so I went back and re-filled my dish after I finished off the sandwich.
The falafels are a bit pricier than other falafel places, but it's well worth it, considering you get to chose from so many interesting toppings. Also, this is an all-veg establishment so you don't have to stare at a rotating dead lamb behind the counter.
