Veg friendly Costa Rican with vegan milkshakes

Irazu is one of the few (if only) Costa Rican restaurants in Chicago. The dining area is small and cozy.

They have veg-friendly items on the menu, including plantain, which is popular. They also do fruit shakes with mango, banana, and exotic Costa Rican-native fruits like guanabana or pinolillo. They can be made with either milk or water.

Yummy!!!!! My friend and I dined here on a Tuesday evening and the place was totally packed. Apparently it's even busier on the weekend and in the summer. Luckily, we got the last free table so we didn't have to wait. The service was friendly and our food came quickly.

We got free chips and salsa but I didn't think they were spectacular. It was nice that the table has two kinds of salsas, but they were both really liquidy, and while they were very spicy (which I like), they didn't have much flavor beyond being hot.

A friend and I split the plantains (ripe, sweet plantains, not the fried tostones), which were very good. I ordered the veggie tostada (beans, guacamole, onions, jalapenos) and it was good, but wasn't spectacular. It would have benefited from some tomatoes or tofu sour cream (it normally comes w/ dairy sour cream so I ordered it without it). I tried my friend's veggie taco, which came w/ pretty much all the same stuff as my tostada but it also had rice. The rice was fabulous--yellow, fluffy, and flavorful.

I also ordered an horchata because I haven't had it in so many years (most places mix dairy milk w/ the rice milk), but Irazu staff assured me that their horchata is just rice, water, sugar, and spices. Very delicious.

This place seems like they're making a real effort to offer vegan options and I would definitely come here again. Also, the food is crazy cheap (about $3 for a big taco or tostada), so you can fill up for very little money.

Irazu is one of the most vegetarian/vegan-friendly Latin American restaurants in Chicago. There is only one option that is labeled "vegan" on the menu, but they can make some of the vegetarian options without dairy (ex. potato tacos served with guacamole, beans, rice and salad). I really like the fruit smoothies (which can also be made without milk - just ask). The service can be slow and Irazu doesn't accept credit cards, but the restaurant is owned by a husband-wife team and a lot of times their children are the members of the waitstaff.
