I am making it mandatory that I bring all of my friends who come out of town to The Seward Cafe for breakfast or lunch. The food is always great! I always get the tofu mock muffin with soy cheese, a double soy latte, vegan fluffy pancake, and usually a cup of fruit will accompany my array of choices. They also have a white hummus sandwich that is oh so yummy and addicting. The Seward Cafe is my favorite place to eat in Minneapolis. I moved here from Southern California and there is nothing like this back home.
Mmm, just ate here a couple weekends ago and I was reminded of how darn tasty the breakfast is.
Super Red-Green Tofu Earth is my fave. So much broccoli, potatoes, tofu, yummmmmy. And the whole order is SO MUCH FOOD! I forgot until I got my plate piled with food.
I totally want to go back again soon. Tofu Mock Muffins and Biscuits and Gravy are calling my name.
i grew up at the Seward. both of my parents worked there when i was little. when they stopped working there i slowly and unwillingly drifted away. i have recently rediscovered it's loveliness. my personal favorite is the righteous pancake with tahini drizzled over the top. yum! you should try it!
Tofu Mock Muffin. That's all I can say!
Amazing place! I made my way to the cafe on a tip from the new president at Augsburg College (I was visiting from Atlanta). He said the place was amazing and he was right. Great food. Fresh. Tons of options. Not to be missed if you're visiting the twin cities.
I finally made it over to Seward this Saturday after hearing about how awesomely vegan-friendly it was. I was blown away by how many choices I had, it was great! I settled on granola with soy milk and fruit and was delighted with the presentation. My soy latte was creamy, frothy and perfect, and the booth was cozy, quiet and intimate. A lovely way to start the weekend, you'll find me there again and again and again.
The Seward Cafe is definitely a new favorite of mine in Mpls. Once you figure out how things work, (you seat yourself, write down your own order and turn it in, etc.), it's great. The atmosphere is really relaxed and is a nice place to chill. I loved the vegan French toast and the vegan sausage patties!
i think its important to stress how many vegan options the seward cafe offers. TONNS! Practically half of the huge menu. yay. I live a few blocks from seward and go there at least a few times a week. The best thing though: worker owned and managed--no fucking boss! You can be certain most of the food is local, organic, and all is vegan as most of the people that work there are very conscious. word.
i've had breakfast every sunday (and some saturdays off) at the seward for 2 years now and i will continue to as long as i can!
The Seward Cafe has a large variety of vegan breakfast options, vegans can have tofu "eggs", pancakes, biscuits and gravy and other popular diner foods. I had the vegan biscuits and gravy with broccoli and a vegan pancake and they were both pretty good.
We love the Seward! It might be because we only get to go there every once in a while, but I'm giving it a high rating anyway. It's lots of fun, it feels like community, and the food is like old style diner food, but it's vegan! It's so much fun, pretty cheap, and tastes good. Their courtyard is the best place to spend a Sunday morning in the summertime.
The vegan Rebel Rocks are quite good - chocolate coconut baked 'rocks'. The Super Green Tofu Earth was good, too, although a tiny greasy for me these days. You can never go wrong with the Biscuits and Gravy Deluxe - homemade whole wheat biscuits with a mushroom gravy topped with broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, and scallions. Delicious. The Tofu Mock Muffin with soy cheese is also a favorite - while it's a bit expensive for the portion size, it is quite a treat. They also have vegan peanut butter cups for those of you who miss Reeses.
The organic beans and rice is a delicious, nutritious bargain at 2.25 - it's a full sized plate (I was expecting a small bowl) of brown rice and pinto beans with scallions for garnish - and they have hot sauce and a jalapeno scallion sauce available for free to jazz it up a bit. Really good.
This is my favorite place ever. Almost completely veg, collectively run. And I DO know someone who works there with no tatoos, piercings, or dreds
The food can get a little greasy and I could do without the smoke though...
Great cheap place that's collectively run. The best vegan french toast I've found in the Cities, plus a ton of other vegan baked goods. Lots of plants througout the place make a nice atomosphere. They also have an outside eating area that makes you feel like you left the city. Crowded on Sunday morning and sometimes overrun with kids.
OMG! Biscuits and Gravy! VEGAN Biscuits and Gravy! So delicious. I would give this place a straight "10" but for some nitpickisms: they should be located nearer to my house and I don't understand the no-cel-phone axiom (I don't find cel phone conversations any more irritating than regular people conversations which, obviously, are not prohibited). I think I'm going to get brunch there tomorrow morning.
What a perfect place to have Sunday morning Brunch if you're vegetarian! I'll have to agree that the hasbrowns are very greasy, and that the tables and chairs need to be upgraded, but I guess some people like the charm of it.
I had been on a hunt for a place in the TwinCiites where you could go for Vegan pancakes that didn't make you barf, and where hasbrowns, tofu, and cheese would merge together. Well I guess I found it!
Try the fresh sqeezed organic carrot juice.
i really miss living near the seward. the food is pretty good and i like spending my money at an employee owned, collectively-run business. they should have a website. i suppose, too busy making food to sit in front of a computer. my favorite dish is the super green earth. i wish there were more kinds of restaurants like this one, collectively run. interesting though, all the conformity involved in living a non-conformist lifestyle. can one be an anarchist without dreads or piercings?
I like the Seward alot, but can really only stand just so much grease on my hashbrowns. Bonus points for being a great community, kid friendly, and telling those damn yuppies to not sit and talk on thier cell phones while the rest of us are trying to enjoy our tofu and fake sausage on an english muffin.
i wonder how many people use their real name at this place.. be an interesting study. the food is pretty good, although it can vary a lot according to who's in the kitchen. they seem to be fond of a food naming convention that involves one or more superlative adjectives, a color, and the word 'earth'. my favorite dish is the Super-Duper-Fantastic Cornflower Blue.. Earth. or something like that. they also have self-service water (and coffee refills), which is always nice for today's modern, empowered diner.
be prepared to do a little balancing act along with your meal, as i don't think i've sat in one chair (even booth!) that was not a teeter-tottery contraption of missing feet and uneven legs. however, if you're lucky enough to get a table with a napkin dispenser that isn't empty, there's always hope for a little shim action to bring some stability back into your life.
Great food, wonderful variety... options for vegans, vegetarians and even good for people with soy allergies (:
This place is affordable and down to earth atmosphere. It is own by those who run it - very nice!! (They have GREAT vegan shakes, try the cold press one with chocolate!) YUM!
i was feeling lowly, so all i had was a biscuit. it was nice. the out of tune piano was also nice, and i spent a good bit of time staring at its keys. unfortunately the workers didn't turn down the music when i began to play, but i guess i didn't ask them. also, crayons and toys to fill up free time.
Seward Cafe has been a favorite eating location of mine for years. Its one of the most colorful places in town. The back patio is open when weather permits and serves as a great place to just sit down with a plate of the vegan biscuits and gravy and read a book or talk to a freind. As a special added bonus, you even get to make up a name for yourself!

The Seward Cafe is my main breakfast spot. I usually order their Righteous Pancake with blackberries and it's a wonderful combination of large juicy berries and fluffy pancake. The last time I was there I had the Red Earth with beans and found the hash browns hot and crispy. The entire plate was delicious. Before going gluten free I usually ordered their traditional vegan pancake (also delicious) and muffins. Their muffins, even day old, are the best I have ever eaten. I tried the vegan french toast once, but felt it was too much dry bread and not enough flavor or moistness.
