I have been meaning to get here for YEARS but the only time I've been around has been on Sundays, when they're closed. This place is a vegan's dream in the middle of a vegan dessert (not counting the veg-friendly restaurant next door). The Bronx has the fewest vegan options of the NYC boroughs (although I admit that I'm not counting Staten Island....sorry!) so I'm always super excited to come across a veg place up here.
The grocery has a great selection of every day items, random items, and Caribbean-specific items, including organic pasta, veggie burgers, Siracha sauce, and plantain chips.
I had already eaten lunch when I stopped in so all I got was a patty to snack on. Most Caribbean places I've been to usually only feature tofu, veggie, and/or the ambiguous "soy" flavor. This place had at least 6 or 7 varities, including soy fish, veggie duck, collards, and ackee. Most were around $2, but the ackee was $3.50. I know I had tasted ackee before but it had been years and I forgot what it tasted like so I had to go for it. The man ringing me up could only describe ackee as being "a fruit and a vegetable, and 'good'". That works for me! It was fantastic! It's hard to describe, as it doesn't taste like anything I've ever had. It tastes like a vegetable but has a subtle sweetness like a fruit, and a definite punch. I also had a piece of fried tofu for 75 cents just because it looked so darn good. I should have got more because it was fantastic!
I will definitely be stopping here again and will have my entire meal here, as I was more impressed with the two items I tried here than with the lunch special I had at the Healthy Choice Caribbean restaurant next door.
