Vegetarian Cafe at York University
Counter Culture is a student-run, alternative food service. Where possible, Counter Culture buys organic, bioregional, locally produced, fair-trade products. Counter Culture serves fresh, healthy lunches and snacks and provides limited catering services to members of the FES community.
Unique to Counter Culture's service -- beyond its home-made soups and fair-trade organic coffee -- are its food-based educational events. Past events have included World Food Day, a Spring Feast, poetry nights, story-telling evenings and the 'Roots to Routes' Media Festival, which focused on food issues.
Counter Culture was registered as a not-for-profit corporation in 1995. The not-for-profit corporate structure was chosen in order to allow the organization to meet its long-term goal of developing into a co-operative. Counter Culture's operating structure currently comprises 12 staff members, 3 managers and 7 board members.
