Info courtesy of Vegetarians in Paradise

An Ethiopian restaurant that displays a good dose of atmosphere and offers a menu with a vegetarian section of well-seasoned traditional Ethiopian dishes. Though it is a little heavy on the oil, the Sambusa, a delicious dough-covered appetizer filled with spicy lentils was a tasty starter. The Vegetarian combination includes the exceptional Merkato Special Shiro, a creamy puree of ground peas cooked in a red pepper sauce with garlic, tomatoes, and complex spices.

I'd give Merkato three and a half stars if I could. We ate there tonight and got the lentil filled sambusas and the vegetarian combination platter which includes all the vegan dishes (six of them, I believe). The injera was too thin in our opinion, and the cabbage tasted like it had been overcooked. Everything else was decent, with our favorite being the yellow split peas and are second favorite the shiro. Those two were solid and so were the sambusas. All in all not that impressive a place, and we prefer Rahel's. On the upside, Merakto was VERY affordable, the combination platters were $6.99, an unbeatable price for a filling dinner. We also liked the atmosphere which was very interesting and different.
