How does Hillside rock... the combination of having the best vegan soul food I could ever imagine and hip hop. This place makes Seattle tolerable. Normally I find myself frustrated at the lack of really cool city things here in Seattle. Hillside is something that doesn't exist any where in the country, its completely unique. The sandwiches are sinful. Health food nuts beware, this isn't your vegan food. This is for people looking to cut the waist lines and live a little.

Love the sandwiches. Always feel a bit guilty though because nothing seems particularly "healthy" since there is always some greasiness. But, hey, everyone needs that every now and then.

I LOVE this place! The first time I had one of their sandwiches (back in 1999), I took the wrapper back home on the train with me to Minneapolis for my partner to smell. I think she thought I was a bit crazy, but we later went to Seattle together and she's a convert too. I only wish they would export or franchise the restaurant to Minneapolis, where I live!

If you’re tired of eating veggies or eating Chinese/Thai and you just want some good ol ’ American type fast food this is the place. I have been dreaming of having vegetarian food this good. I just recently went back to being a vegetarian and I have had some REALLY bad tofu experiences. I have to say this stuff tastes like the real thing if not better. I took two meat eaters to the U-district shop and I was very VERY apprehensive about the food. One taste and it totally changed my mind and my friends. We all tried something different; the tofustrami sandwich with potato salad and coleslaw on it was fantastic! My friend ordered the Fremont Philly steak sub with seitan . OMG it was to die for and I hate vegan cheese and usually steer clear of it but this was finger lickin ’ good.
This place is a must for any vegetarian or vegan. If you want lots of veggies or another salad go try the six hundred other vegetarian places…this place is good ol ’ deli style food and deserts. I cant wait to go back and try more!

Oh yeah, and chocolate cake slices as big as your head!

My wife and I started making regular visits to Hillside's Tacoma cafe en route between Portland and Bellingham. Being vegans, everything used to revolve around that cafe being open! Now that we live in Bellingham, we visit the Seattle location more often. Obviously, we love their food. RE: the oily factor: it doesn't bother us at all. It's "good oil" afterall, and the fastfood fix is what we go in there for. We've never once felt sick from it. If we want steamed vegetable, we go to the Bamboo Garden (Seattle) or Bo Kong (Vancouver, B.C.). It warms our hearts to see such a progressive family operation like Hillside. I do believe they were one of the first all-vegan sandwich caterers/cafes on the planet, developing their first prototypes back in the 80s... One day, vegans will look back on that family's contributions to vegan cuisine and see them as the groundbreaking pioneers they are.

The mac & yease is scrumptious...has a bit of a cajun/soul flare to it..the atmosphere is smooth nice jams playing in the background..I work at UW and consider this the best veggie restartaunt around the area...

My experience here was a bit mixed. My husband's sandwich was really good, but my macaroni and "yease" was...eh...not fantastic. The chocolate cookie was fairly dry, but the vegan ice cream was great.

I was expecting more vegetable-based sandwiches, so I was a litle disappointed to see that most sandwiches were based on tofu or tempeh. However, that does not reflect on the quality of the sandwiches.

This is a good place for vegetarians and vegans, but I'm not sure I'd take a potential "convert" here for their first all-veg experience. Except the ice cream. I'd definitely feed them the soy ice cream.

No restrooms. Uncool.

the sandwiches are amazing. they also offer other "soul food"- mixed greens, enchiladas, lasagna, all kinds of stuff. and let's not forget desserts :)

My Jamaican Jerk Tofu Sandwich was so tasty, I took a picture to bring back home with me.

Very tasty sandwiches with lots of flavor. My only complaint is the oiliness. It probably wouldn't be so bad if they didn't fry the buns.

I like the food so much here, but almost everything is too oily. The macaroni and yease is delectable, and every sandwich I've had is really good. My favorite dessert is the bread pudding.

These people make the best friggin sandwiches I've ever had. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but I eat their sandwiches because they are so incredibly good. Truly amazing!
