Vegetarian Cafe

The only remaining vegetarian cafe in Lancaster. Many of their standards are vegan, and they try to always have a vegan special. The soup is always vegan, and they have vegan chocolate cake and sticky toffee pudding. Organic option every Friday. Cafe is on the second floor (no lift), but there's a secluded patio garden out the back. Licensed to sell beers and wine. Seats 60. Very child friendly - they have a dedicated kids' corner with toys and books, plus a separate kids' menu. Downstairs is Single Step Wholefoods

Directions:

From the town centre, head south along Penny Street (one of the pedestrianised shopping streets). After you pass the Oxfam shop on your right, cross the next road, past the temp agency, a couple of other shops, then at the Golden Jade Chinese restaurant, go down the alleyway, and the Whale Tale and Single Step are in front of you - easier to find than it sounds.

Went to university in Lancaster and this was exactly what i needed once i went vegan. The specials change frequently, but the jacket potatoes, whale tail salad, and tofu bacon mushroom sandwiches are all amazing. Don't forget the black forest cake or other wonderful desserts! This place is hidden in the town center and only open during lunch time, but well worth the search. After lunch make your way to Single Step veg. co-op next door for hazelnut waffles!!

I worked in Single Step (below The Whale Tale) for a number of years, so know it well. Even if it wasn't the only remaining vegetarian place in town, it would still be the best one to visit, if only for the chocolate cake! They're also well know though for their vegetarian and vegan breakfasts, and if you're feeling in a healthier mood, try the Whale Tail Salad - definitely not the usual limp lettuce and slice of tomato.
