Don't know if I would go out of my way to get here, but if you end up in Iowa City and you are a vegetarian or vegan - I suggest a trip to the deli counter.
There is one in the downtown Iowa City co-op and a larger one in Coralville. Great selections of fresh veg sandwiches. Made to order or ready made from their take away section.
The store itself is somewhat unimpressive. Not a lot of choice with tofu and other meat replacements and you overpay because it is a co-op.
Best Selection in Eastern Iowa, and the best vegan food I've ever had. It's worth the trip from Illinois just to dine at the New Pioneer Co-Op Deli in Coralville. I would also give it another 10 for the fine selection of products in their store.
The New Pioneer Coop is a great place to dine in the Eastern Iowa region. If you are a Vegetarian or Vegan and have not yet traveled here it is worth a visit. I know this because I work there.
Now I do not praise the Coop because I am an employee (i have worked here for about 3 years), it is a great place to be acquainted if you choose to practice health eating, organic, macrobiotic, vegetarian, or vegan lifestyles. I am a vegan and at the Coop I work with great people who are eager to talk about their food and help, and I create delicious vegan food, stop by if this interests you!
