This place is an absolute joke, which is unfortunate, because I was very excited to discover a new vegan restaurant right off of ODU's campus. path is open from 11am to 2pm, but on my first couple of attempts to eat there, they had not unlocked their doors by 11:15.
path ODU is (bizarrely) located in the foyer to The Edge Norfolk, which has the atmosphere of basement crawlspace: black walls, a total lack of decor, and no where to sit comfortably. Just being inside its walls is distinctly uncomfortable, which is in no way aided by the extremely unfriendly bar staff. I'd prefer not to rate path on the failings of The Edge, but it is impossible to segregate the experience of eating at path
from being inside The Edge.
path itself is basically a food counter. The menu is scrawled on scraps of paper — it looks like the work of a college student who forgot to bring a notebook to class and made a half-assed effort to scribble on a flyer he found in his pockets. The menu itself is sparse, featuring a few sandwiches like "Buffalo chicken" and "chicken salad", served with chips or fries.
I had the Buffalo chicken, which was a Gardein Chick'n Filet(I know this because I watched them open the package) fried and tossed in buffalo sauce, on a bun with lettuce and veganaise. If you've ever had Gardein's Chick'n Filets, you will know that they are puny — less than 2 ounces. The sandwich itself is only $5, though, and the taste was fine, even if I was left hungry. The french fries that I got with the sandwich, however, were a greasy, soggy, oversalted and undercooked disaster. I ate about 4 of them before tossing them out.
path seems like a restaurant that was put together on a whim by people who nothing about running a restaurant. Given that their other location has already shut its doors after less than three months in business, I feel pretty sure that this is actually the case.
If path had great food, they could possibly get by serving it in the abyssmal atmosphere that is The Edge. If path had great atmosphere and service, they could justify serving mediocre vegan food. Unfortunately, path fails to satisfy either half of this equation. They fill a void for vegan food on ODU's campus, but it's a void better left empty. I'd recommend staying away, but I sincerely doubt they'll be around long enough for you to give them a chance, anyway.
