Fine Indian cuisine in a upscale, swanky setting
To walk into Jewel of the Crown, you'd almost think you'd have to be a millionaire to eat there. (Decor-wise, this is easily the nicest Indian restaurant in the Phoenix area.) But price-wise, it's no more expensive than any other Indian restaurant in the Phoenix metro area.
Food-wise, it's pretty darn good as well. And there is a lot here for vegetarians on the menu. (Though Vegan-minded diners will probably have to make slight menu adjustments for some of the vegetarian menu items; as many of them contain cream, butter, or cheese.)
Appetizers here include Vegetable Samosa (a deep-fried pastry with potatoes and peas); Onion Bhaji (batter-fried onion); and a Pakora (batter-fried mix vegetables).
For soup, there's a delicious lentil soup, seasoned with herbs and spices.
For bread, there's Naan, Garlic Naan, Roti (whole-wheat), Paratha (buttered whole wheat), Alu Paratha (with mashed potatoes and onions), and Onion Kulcha (with onion and spices). Though, like most Indian restaurants in town, the so-called "whole wheat" bread looks awfully pasty-white.
Their vegetarian entrees (served with rice for no additional charge) include Okra (with onions); Masala dishes; Bharta Makhni (eggplant with herbs, onion, and tomatoes); Mutter Alu (with green peas, potatoes, onion, and tomato); and Alu Gobi, cauliflower and potatoes seasoned with herbs and spices. (All other veg entrees come with either cheese or cream - which can probably be left out for those that desire that.)
There's no lunch buffet here, but they do have numerous veg lunch specials, including a vegetarian Thalli sampler plate; which may be a better bang for the buck (at $9) than some Indian lunch buffets in town (as it also comes with bread, rice, and dessert).
Open 7 nights a week. Closed for lunch Monday and Tuesday. Full menu available online; click on website link to view.
