vegan-friendly Vietnamese

Pho 27 is a very casual, vegan-friendly Vietnamese restaurant in an unexpected south side neighborhood. While the menu doesn't feature many vegetarian options, nearly every dish (rice, noodle, salad) can be made vegan if you specify veggies and/or tofu and omit the fish sauce. Please note that the pho (soup), which can be made with tofu and veggies canNOT be made vegan, as the broth is beef-based).

Most entrees are between $9-11 and the serving sizes are quite large. The atmosphere is very relaxed.

Delish! I was initially put off by the lack of vegetarian options on the menu but the waitress informed me that most of the rice and noodle dishes could be made with tofu and/or vegetables instead of meat. Watch out for the pho (soup) though, even if you get it with veggies, the broth is beef-based!

I went with the spring rolls, which were only advertised as having shrimp and pork but the waitress subbed in some tofu. I think she only charged us half the price of the meat version, which is great. The rolls were delicious! The spring rolls had the raw, soft wrapper, and were stuffed with rice noodles, tofu and veggies and came with a peanut sauce. Yum.

For my entree, I went with the tofu/veggie chow fun, which isn't on the menu but was delicious and cost about $9. Chow fun (thick, wide rice noodles) are my favorite noodles but these were particularly good because they were panfried first so they were ever so slightly charred, which added a new dimension to the flavor. The tofu was perfectly firm and fried and fantastic.

The atmosphere is very casual (I think the restaurant is an old Sizzler or Wendy's or something), so it wouldn't be a great first date location, but it's great for a dinner with friends or something casual with family. The service was prompt and friendly and I really enjoyed the food so I will definitely be back.
