Superb Mediterranean food on ASU campus

Just east of Mill Ave. is excellent Mediterranean food, at the Phoenicia Cafe. With outdoor dining and a bustling atmosphere, you might quickly forget about many of the other restaurants in town that serve the same type of food.

Appetizers here consist of Hummus, Baba, Dolmas, Falafel, Spinach Pie, and Fava Beans, and a Vegetarian appetizer sampler with Tabouli salad.

And speaking of salad, they also serve a Greek Salad, Fattoush Salad, a Garden Salad, ranging in price from $3.20 to $5.49.

If you're looking for a sandwich or a sandwich wrap, you'll find numerous vegetarian selections consisting of the appetizer ingredients, ranging in price from $3.29 to $3.99.

There's only two vegetarian entrees on the menu, a Vegetarian Couscous (served with vegetables and the red sauce) for $7, and a Falafel Deluxe plate (a pita cut in half and stuffed with Falafel, tahini, and Hummus, garnished with salad and House Dressing).

And if that's not enough, they also serve fresh vegetable and fruit juices.

We tried the Phoenicia Cafe for lunch and were quite disappointed. The prices were high, and the quality was below to average. The hummus was made from a mix, which was average, but when you have had better you know the difference. To get what is usually part of an entree such as salad or soup you needed to pay $1.50 in addition to the entree cost. Also you got the choice of hummus or rice, but for and extra $1.50 you could have both. For a college restaurant, this was pricey especially when you can go a short distance to Haji Babba's and get better food for less money. If you want a real treat try Doobies Cafe S. of Guadalupe on Dobson in Mesa. Everything is freshly made and for less then what you paid at the Phoenicia Cafe, you get your choice of a fresh salad or fresh lentil soup.
