Oaxaca city, Oaxaca
Farmers' Market near El Centro
"El Pochete" (named after an endemic tree species) refers to two associated organic markets in Oaxaca city. The larger market is located in the barrio/colonia of Xochimilco and takes place in the outdoor area of the church, Xochimilco. The smaller market is located closer to El Zócolo on Rayon 411 in downtown Oaxaca, between the streets Xicotencatl (also called Pino Suarez further north) and Melchor Ocampo (also known as Avenida Juarez further north).
You will find lots of prepared foods and vendors selling organic and veggie-inspired traditional oaxaca fare. Generally, you can find eggs, in-season fruits and vegetables, cheese, beauty care products and handi-crafts. It is not inexpensive, but you can rest assured that you are purchasing directly from small farmers.
There are also communal tables to eat your breakfast/lunch or to relax. Bathrooms are on site but you will want to bring your own toilet paper.
