vegan-friendly Caribbean snacks
Kingston Tropical Bakery, started by Jamaican immigrants 30 years ago, offers sweet and savory breads, and vegetable patties. While they only offer one vegan patty (a homemade vegetable patty stuffed with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and other veggies), the surrounding neighborhood is a true food dessert, offering little more than McDonalds and Kennedy Fried Chicken.
The bakery is fairly small and has no seating available so you will have to get your patties to go. At $1.75 each, each patty is about the size of the palm of your hand and 2 or 3 will serve as large snack or small meal.

I'm in this neighborhood for work fairly frequently and it has been pretty much impossible to get any vegan food aside from potato chips and candy from the may bodegas or a piece of fruit from the very occasional produce cart. So, when I happened upon Kingston Tropical Bakery and saw that they offer veggie patties, I got pretty excited, and after trying them, I got downright ecstatic!
As I've discovered that quite a few Jamaican/Caribbean restaurants actually get their patties from Golden Krust bakery, which is a reasonable option, but their patties are nothing to brag about. I was happy to find that Kingston makes all their patties in house, which is very apparent when you try one of them. The veggie patty I had was DELICIOUS! The crust was much softer and flakier than Golden Krust and the filling was much fresher and flavorful. The veggies were perfectly cooked and seasoned - not dry and plain, like patties at some restaurants.
I sure hope Kingston adds more veg options to their menu but for now, I'm quite content making a meal out of a few veg patties and a piece of fruit.
